Amulet of cow-headed goddess with feathers atop disk and horns 525-30 BC Late Period-Ptolemaic Period Starting in the later Late Period and continuing through the Ptolemaic Period, a type of glass amulet cast by pressing the glass into a shallow open mold appears. The back was left rough, and the amulets may look ragged because glass overflowed the mold around the edges. The earlier amulets are monochrome, bi- or multicolor amulets supplement the repertoire during the Ptolemaic Period. Some of the amulets can be specifically tied to spells of the Book of the Dead - for example, acc. no. 17.194.2526 - and most are clearly funerary amulets, presumably meant to be wrapped between the bandages of the mummy where the presence of the amulet would do its job irrespective of its degree of finish.. House Post 19th century Sentani people The Sentani people of northwest New Guinea live in villages built over the waters of Lake Sentani, a large inland lake. Sentani houses are constructed on wood pilings and are linked by raised boardwalks, allowing the residents to walk around the village. Until the early 1920s, the most imposing structures in most Sentani villages were the houses of the hereditary chiefs. These houses were lavishly decorated with architectural carvings on the pilings that supported the roof and floor.The carvings were of two basic types: tall Y-shaped posts, such as the present work, which supported the central roof beam, and human images carved atop the pilings that supported the floor. Like all Sentani roof supports, this work is made from a single inverted tree. Originally, the upper trunk was sunk into the lake bed, while the flaring roots formed the wing-like projections at the top, at whose junction the roof beam rested. Two Carved Martial Trophies.These martial trophies represent the weaponry of a cavalryman and an infantryman in the Dutch army. They adorned the sides of Ferdinand Bols painting Aeneas at the Court of Latinus, which hung above the hearth in the assembly room of the Admiralty of Amsterdam. The painting is also on display in this gallery. The Admiralty was responsible for the fleet.

Study for a Portrait of Mathilde Salle modeled ca. 1892, cast 1920 Edgar Degas French Upon Degas's death in 1917, more than 150 figurative sculptures were found in his studio. Most were made of fragile wax, clay, and plastiline (a wax- and oil-based modeling material). Many had deteriorated. Only a few were preserved in copies that had been cast from them in plaster. Except for the wax Little Fourteen-Year-Old Dancer (Washington: NGA) none of these sculptures had been publicly exhibited during the artists lifetime.Although Degas had not favored reproducing his sculptures in more permanent materials, his heirs authorized that copies be cast in bronze in order to preserve the compositions and to sell them as finished works. Paul-Albert Bartholomé, a sculptor and Degas's longtime friend, prepared 72 of the figures for casting, a process executed by the distinguished Paris foundry A.-A. Hébrard et Cie. The quality of the Degas bronzes was tightly controlled and their edition was limited.

Gope board, 18th century, Unknown, 49 1/2 x 22 in. (125.73 x 55.88 cm), Wood, pigment, Papua New Guinea, 18th century, Gope boards and shields are protective objects that are named after ancestors important to their owners. Ancestors become connected with the objects and help protect the owner from physical or supernatural harm. The gope board, or special shield, shown here was kept in the mens house in communities in the Papuan gulf region of New Guinea. It belonged to an individual man whose ancestor is depicted on the board, and who was called upon for protection during battle or times of danger for his village. On those occasions, the gope board was removed from its place in the mens house and carried like a shield. The striking Asmat shield shown here held similar ancestral power. Its carved elements and symbols—including an abstract depiction of the ancestors face at top—added to the power and protective value of the shield.

Tomb of Ramesses III, Pharaoh of the Twentieth Dynasty in Ancient Egypt. reigned from 1186 to 1155 BC and is considered to be the last monarch of the New Kingdom to wield any substantial authority over Egypt. Tomb KV11 is located in the main valley of the Valley of the Kings. The tomb has been open since antiquity, and has been known variously as Bruce's Tomb (named after James Bruce who entered the tomb in 1768) and The Harper's Tomb (due to paintings of two blind harpers in the tomb).

Funerary Mask. Culture: Lambayeque (Sicán). Dimensions: H. 11 1/2 in. × W. 19 1/2 in. × D. 4 in. (29.2 × 49.5 × 10.2 cm). Date: A.D. 900-1100.Around A.D. 1000, high-status tombs were constructed at Batán Grande, a site now called the Sicán Archaeological Precinct, where a single burial could include as many as five masks: one attached to the head and the others stacked at the feet. Cinnabar, a red mineral pigment, covers much of this example's cheeks and forehead, emulating face paint. The textile-like design of this crown was achieved by delicately hammering from the reverse (repoussé).
