The catacombs of Rome--underground burial chambers used by all religions in the late Roman and early Byzantine era--are a particularly rich source of early Christian imagery. These images express Christian hopes of salvation. Here a beardless man dressed in a toga and the inscription "Live" are framed by miracle scenes. Beginning at the top and moving clockwise, these are Christ saving the three Hebrews in the fiery furnace (Daniel 3), Christ healing the paralytic (Matthew 9:1-8), Tobias with the fish that the archangel Raphael advises him will help restore his father's sight (Tobit 6), and Christ turning water into wine at Cana (John 2:3-10). The accounts by official court historians and descriptions provided by visitors evoke a vibrant cultural center continually redefined by its leadership through shifting internal and external power dynamics. According to oral tradition, circa 1300, Edo chiefs are reputed to have reached out to the leader of neighboring Ife, Oranmiyan, to establish a new divinely sanctioned royal dynasty. Since then, the investiture of Benins rulers to the title of obas has conferred upon them at once a role of chief priest officiating in important religious ceremonies and presiding over an elaborate structure of palace officials. During the fifteenth century reign of Oba Ewuare, Benins armies were formed and the fortification of its capital with a massive wall undertaken. One of its most ambitious attempts at reproducing the appearance of hardstones can be seen in this cup (see also 09.129.11a) and saucer with matching tray, which simulate malachite and jasper on a porphyry ground. A less complex but equally elegant decoration is found on the cup and saucer painted to imitate lapis lazuli.metal construction figure metal construction figure Copyright: xZoonar.com/OxanaxRishnyakx 6029946Pair of Earrings (with 16.10.344). This paperweight uses a traditional glass-making technique called millefiori to great effect. Italian for ìone thousand flowers,î millefiori was first developed in fifteenth-century Venice. In the nineteenth century, French glassmakers revived the technique with a cultural twist. Arranged to evoke traditional French gardens such as the Tuileries in Paris, paperweights like this example brought a little of this landscaping magic indoors. From the late 1840s to early 1860s, French manufacturers of fine glass and crystalósuch as Baccarat (Alsace), Clichy (Paris), and Saint-Louis (Lorraine)ócatered to the vast public enthusiasm for beautiful yet functional desk accessories.
