Iran These sherds were once part of the rim of a pottery vessel with a loop handle. They are made of gray clay which has been burnished. They were excavated at Tepe Nush-i Jan, an Iron Age hilltop site about 60 km sound of Hamadan in western Iran. Nush-i Jan was occupied in the 7th and 6th centuries B.C., and its occupants are generally thought to be the Medes, an Iranian people known from Assyrian, Achaemenid and Biblical sources. Though the textual sources portray them as a powerful empire, archaeological evidence for the Medes has yet to sustain this impression. Rather, they seem to have lived in scattered fortified sites in western and central Iran, without any clear capital. Nush-i Jan, one of the best known of these sites, features two temples, a columned hall, and a fort, where these sherds were found. Given their fragmentary state, it is difficult to say anything about how the vessel they came from was used.Gray pottery of this sort is first aFragment of a Jar 9th century. The fortress had been captured and destroyed by the Turks in 1470. Now divided largely between the Ethnological Museum, Athens, and The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Chalcis hoard contains many rare and unusual elements of fourteenth- and fifteenth-century armor. Of particular importance are the variety of headpieces and the many fragments of brigandines (armor for the torso constructed of small plates riveted to layers of fabric), some of which retain portions of their original velvet covering. The Chalcis armor provides a unique picture of the armament used in the Aegean, one of the easternmost military outposts of the Venetian empire.. It is very thinly potted and displays a finely tapered rim. The transparent turquoise glaze appears iridescent due to decay in the soil. This object was most probably made in the 11th or 12th century, at a time when potters were experimenting with new technologies such as stonepaste. Early stonepaste vessels were mostly monochrome-glazed, in turquoise, purple, white, blue, with the occasional splash of a different color. They were thinly-potted, such as in this example. West of Nishapur, in central Iran, vessels displayed a range of scalloped, lobed, and variably decorated rims, suggesting that the development of the medium followed slightly different paths in the two regions.. In the northwest corner of this room they found a mis-matched partial set of gaming pieces. The two types, conical and spool-shaped, are common components of the board games senet and 20-squares which were usually combined in a single game box with the game boards on opposite sides, and a drawer for the gaming pieces and the throw sticks or knuckle bones that were used like dice to determine how the pieces were moved on the boards. The eight gameing pieces, five conical and three spool-shaped, were lying on their sides next to the outlined remains of an insect-eaten game box. Ancient EgyptianVessel with Splashed Decoration 10th century Two techniques of decoration were used on this bowl excavated from Nishapur in eastern Iran. In a technique known as sgraffito, a festoon and leaf-like motifs were etched into a white slip that had been applied to the earthenware body and allowed to dry. The etching reveals the body of the bowl, in this case an earthy red fabric, which then stands out in contrast to the white slip to showcase the motif. Next, blobs of green, brown and yellow glazes were applied to the surface with a thin coating of transparent glaze. When the bowl was fired, these colored glazes were allowed to run down the sides of the bowl in the kiln, producing dramatic streaks on the steep exterior sides of the bowl. The combination of the sgraffito and splashing techniques was very popular in the medieval Islamic lands and examples have been attributed to production centers in Syria, Iraq, and Iran.. Porcelain; overall: 24.8 x 34.9 x 25.7 cm (9 3/4 x 13 3/4 x 10 1/8 in.). The ceramic factory at Chelsea, located along the river Thames in western London, was Britains most renowned factory of decorative porcelain in the mid-1700s. Large tureens in the form of chickens or rabbits appealed to wealthy aristocrats, who took great care in developing specimen animal and poultry breeds on their country estates. The design for this particular tureen was taken from a popular seventeenth-century print by Francis Barlow depicting a farmyard.Round Plaque. Culture: Vicús. Dimensions: Diam. 2 1/4 in. (5.7 cm).
