Marble bust of a youth. Culture: Roman. Dimensions: 26 3/8 × 17 5/8 in. (67 × 44.8 cm). Date: ca. A.D. 140.The bust may be seen as a funerary portrait. The unusual addition of the lion's skin, associated with the semi-divine Hercules (Herakles), between the bust and the circular base probably signifies the parents' wish to glorify their son. Moreover, he is unclothed in a heroic manner. The youth is portrayed as an older boy but his features are still childlike. When acquired by the Museum a century ago, the bust was heavily covered with accretions and was long regarded as authentic. However, after radical cleaning in 1984, the antiquity of the bust was questioned, and it was removed from display. Recent study and re-evaluation, including the identification of the marble as coming from a quarry not far from the city of Aphrodisias in ancient Caria (present-day Turkey), have prompted the sculpture to be reinstated. (69.22 x 53.34 x 24.13 cm), Marble, United States, 19th century, At a time when less than 1 percent of American women went to college, Harriet Goodhue Hosmer studied anatomy and moved to Rome to study sculpture. In 1858 she established her own sculpture studio in Rome, leading a team of more than twenty men. Hosmer often depicted strong female figures. In Greek mythology, Medusa was a beautiful woman whom the gods transformed into a Gorgon, a creature with snakes for hair, whose gaze turned those who looked at her to stone. Hosmers compassionate rendering shows Medusas transformation in progress, snakes intertwined with her lovely hair.

Head of Augustus 27 B.C.-A.D. 14 Roman Period, Augustus This small head is thought to depict the Roman Emperor Augustus. It follows a Roman prototype for his portrait that was developed in the earlier part of his long reign, but continued in use. Paul Zanker has suggested it might have been created late in Augustus' reign or even in that of Tiberius. Egyptian influence may be present in the suggestion of loose flesh beneath the prominent cheekbones. The original context of the head is unknown, but it was said to be from Memphis, which is reasonable. A Memphite provenance would reflect the importance of the traditional religious capital in Augustus's political domination of the country. A cult of Augustus existed there, and the High Priest of Ptah of Memphis, the most important official in the country's traditional religious structure, was chosen as its chief officiant, the "prophet of Caesar."
