Head of a man ca. 3rd-4th century A.D. This fine male portrait head is thought to date from the middle of the first millennium A.D. and may have been part of a larger royal sculpture. The figure is wearing a stylized laurel wreath, a symbol of high rank. The use of the wreath to denote status reflects the influence of the Graeco-Roman world and appears in more realistic form on the coins of the kingdom of Himyar from the first centuries B.C. and A.D. A long mustache drapes along each side of the mouth, the chin is bearded, and a single ringlet is carefully carved on the surface of the left cheek. This last detail is undoubtedly significant since it is, to this day, characteristic of the hairstyle of Yemeni Jews. In the fourth century A.D. many of the kings of Himyar were converted to Judaism, so this feature may eventually aid in the identification of the figure. Carved from translucent alabaster with beautifully polished surfaces, this portrait is a notable example of the art of ancie

A Young Warrior 1490s Tullio Lombardo This youth clad in antique-styled armor may represent Saint George or Saint Theodore, Christian warriors who were especially venerated in Venice. He would have led a lance in his right hand and may have guarded a tomb. His energetic pose, twist of his head, and tensely held arms convey the alertness required of a guardian figure. Truthfulness to classical examples was esteemed in Renaissance Venice; this sculptor paid particular attention to rendering the delicately textured scrolling vines that decorate the breastplate, and even carved the laces that hold the metal sleeves together. He left the back unfinished, which indicates it was originally installed in a niche or against a wall.. A Young Warrior. Tullio Lombardo (Italian, ca. 1455-1532) , and workshop. George Washington 1838-44, carved after 1844 Hiram Powers American Powers based this bust of George Washington (1732-1799) on the authoritative portrait the French sculptor Jean-Antoine Houdon had modeled from life during his visit to America in 1785. The dignified image of the first president became the most successful of Powerss portraits, with at least thirty-six life-size replicas carved. In some of them, the shoulders are covered in contemporary attire, while in others, such as this example, they are enveloped in a toga-like garment, a standard Neoclassical device. In the drape and the unincised eyeballs, Powers sought to link the bust with antique portraiture.. George Washington. Hiram Powers (American, Woodstock, Vermont 1805-1873 Florence). Woman with Earrings Woman with Earrings, 100-105 C.E. Encaustic on wood, 15 1/4 x 9 1/8 x 1/16 in. (38.8 x 23.2 x 0.2 cm). Traditional Egyptian burials included face masks, coffins, or mummy boards with an idealized image of the deceased. Later, in the Roman Period, much more lifelike portraits represented the individualized features of the embalmed person. These were placed within mummy wrappings directly over the head of the mummy. Portraits such as this are often referred to as Fayum portraits” because a great number of them were discovered in the Fayum oasis in Egypt. However, the exact origin of Woman with Earrings and two similar portraits displayed in this gallery is not known. Egyptian, Classical, Ancient Near Eastern Art 100-105 C.E.
