A photograph taken of Philae, an island in the reservoir of the Aswan Low Dam, Egypt. Philae was initially located near the expansive First Cataract of the Nile in Upper Egypt and was the site of an Egyptian temple complex. The temple complex was dismantled and moved to nearby Agilkia Island as part of the UNESCO Nubia Campaign project, protecting this and other compounds before the 1970 completion of the Aswan High Dam. The most ancient was a temple for Isis, built in the reign of Nectanebo I during 380-362 BC, the other ruins date from the Ptolemaic Kingdom (282-145 BC), with many traces of Roman work in Philae dedicated to Ammon-Osiris.

These details are from the black limestone obelisk of Shalmaneser III and dates to 854-824 B.C. It was found in 1846 by Henry Layard who was excavating the ancient Assyrian capital of Kalhu (Nimrud). These scenes from the second side of the obelisk and show, from top to bottom: (1) tribute bearers of Jebu, King of Israel, (2) tributary animals, (3) tribute bearers with shawls and bags. The obelisk is now housed in the British Museum.

Relief panel ca. 883-859 B.C. Assyrian This panel from the Northwest Palace at Nimrud (ancient Kalhu) depicts a winged supernatural figure. Such figures appear throughout the palace, sometimes flanking either the figure of the Assyrian king or a stylized "sacred tree." The reliefs were painted, but today almost none of the original pigment survives. However, the reliefs themselves retain incredible detail, including intricate incised designs on many of the figures clothing.The figure is human-headed and faces right, holding in his left hand a bucket and in his right hand a cone whose exact nature is unclear. One suggestion has been that the gesture, sometimes performed as here by figures flanking a sacred tree, is symbolic of fertilization: the "cone" resembles the male date spathe used by Mesopotamian farmers, with water, to artificially fertilize female date-palm trees. A photograph taken of the Red Chapel of Hatshepsut (the Chapelle Rouge) constructed initially as a barque shrine during the reign of Hatshepsut, the fifth pharaoh of the eighteenth dynasty of Ancient Egypt and ruled from approximately 1479 to 1458 BC. Although it had been demolished and parts were reused in antiquity, following rediscovery, the chapel has been reconstructed using its original materials. Its original location is thought to have been in the central court of the temple of Amun at Karnak, near Thebes.

Relief with cartouches of Psammuthis 393 B.C. Late Period After the long Persian domination, the desire for building and renovation was strongly manifested in the 29th dynasty even before the grand temple programs of the 30th dynasty. Psammuthis only reigned for one year, and may have been a southern challenger to the son of his predecessor Nepherites. Even so, he appears to have maintained in Thebes a program of growth and building first envisioned by his predecessor Nepherities and reaching its culmination in the reign of his successor Achoris. This block was obtained in Luxor and is very similar to one oriented in the opposite direction that had been reused in a village near Luxor and was acquired by Lepsius for Berlin. It has been conjectured to come from the restoration of the magazine for offerings to the south of the Sacred Lake at Karnak that was partly and perhaps wholly the work of Psammuthis. Stela of Seankhptah ca. 1887-1840 B.C. Middle Kingdom This roughly shaped stela is dedicated to the palace controller Seankhptah, son of Ameny. Sporting a shoulder-length wig, he is shown seated on a block seat with one hand placed flat on his chest. The inscribed texts reveal that the stela was made by Seankhptahs retainer and hall-keeper Senbebu, son of Sebekre, who is shown standing on the right. Stela of Amenemopet, a Priest of Senwosret I ca. 1479-1391 B.C. New Kingdom A man named Amenemopet dedicated this stela to members of his family. His father, Pahur, and mother, Mery, are seated at the upper left and receive offerings from Amenemopet. Behind Mery's chair is another son whose name is not preserved. On the lower half of the stela, Amenemopet offers to another male relative whose name is not preserved. Both Amenemopet and his father were priests who attended to the funerary cult of Senwosret I, a Middle Kingdom ruler who had lived some 500 years earlier.. This ancient Egyptian limestone relief dates to the Fifth Dynasty (3480-2350 B.C.) and was found in the ancient necropolis at Abusir in the pyramid tomb of Niuserre , the sixth king of the Fifth Dynasty. It measure 2.75 feet. The design along the top shows pelicans as house pets and falcons with their newly-hatched young ones. The middle section shows a boat built from papyrus. And the relief at bottom shows desert animals. Note that some areas of the relief are missing, and some of the probable design filled.

Date: ca. 883-859 B.C..This relief, from the palace of the Assyrian king Ashurnasirpal II (r. ca. 883-859 B.C.), depicts a king, probably Ashurnasirpal himself, and an attendant. The two larger-than-life-sized figures are carved in low relief, and as with other reliefs in the palace featuring the image of the king, the carving is particularly fine and shows special attention to detail. The panel joins a second relief that shows a further attendant, also facing the king, and a winged supernatural protective figure. Together, the two panels show the king flanked by his human courtiers, just as in other scenes he or the Assyrian Sacred Tree are flanked by human and eagle-headed winged guardian figures.The king is immediately identifiable by his crown, a distinctive truncated cone with a smaller cone emerging from the center, with a long 'streamer' hanging from its back. False door niche block of Merykhufu ca. 2551-2528 B.C. Old Kingdom The inspector, priest, and king's acquaintance Merykhufu and his wife the king's acquatinance Nebuhotep are named and depicted as large figures on this false door niche block. On the left Merykhufu is accompanied by a boy who grasps his father's staff and is labeled 'his son Khnemhesu'; on the right a small girl labeled 'her daughter Nebuiret' turns back toward Nebuhetep.There are no positive indicators, but this block may date as early as the reign of Khufu. Merykhufu incorporates the name of the pharaoh Khufu in his own, although the pharaoh was admired and inspired a cult long after his death.
