Plaque fragment with battle scene ca. 9th century B.C. Assyrian This broken piece of ivory was incised with a battle scene, now difficult to see because of the extensive damage to the piece. At center is a chariot, driven by a figure who holds the horses reins, standing next to a bearded archer who raises his bow. Their clothing and the archers beard identify them as Assyrians. A spear is set in the back platform of the chariot, extending diagonally away from the two soldiers in the chariot; next to the spear point, an arm dangles, probably belonging to the corpse of an enemy soldier. Below and to the right, a soldier with a short beard and an unusual helmet adorned with feathers or spikes stands before a pair of horses, his arms upraised in surrender. Carved ivory pieces such as this were widely used in the production of elite furniture during the early first millennium B.C., and were often inlaid into a wooden frame using joinery techniques and glue. Stela of a Woman Named Niseret ca. 3050 B.C. Early Dynastic Period This stela bears the name of a woman who lived in the early days of the Egyptian state. Her stela was found in the royal cemetery in Abydos, which yielded approximately 360 similar stelae, the majority of which belonging to women.The surface of the stela is weatherworn, but one can still make out the three hieroglyph and the image of a squatting woman, carved in larger proportions. The reading of the name is difficult to translate, as the hieroglyphs belong to the earliest stages of the writing system, before more standard forms were introduced. Thus, her name has been previously rendered as Senba, Niseret, and Nitkhnum. Ibex Eating, c. AD 400-600. Sasanian, Iran, 5th-7th Century. Stucco (gypsum plaster) with traces of paint; overall: 30.8 cm (12 1/8 in.). From about AD 224 until about 650, the Sasanian kings ruled a rich and powerful empire that stretched from Iran and Iraq to Afghanistan and Georgia (Russia). The Sasanians, named for Sasan, their first king, controlled parts of the lucrative Silk Route, and with their accrued wealth they built great palaces furnished with luxurious silks and lavish vessels made of silver mined in their own territories. The Sasanians were Zoroastriansworshippers of Ahuramazda, the spirit of Good, who was in constant struggle with Evil. On some of the works of art shown here, the hunting scenes or the scenes of combat between two species of animal or between man and animal reflect Zoroastrian beliefs. On other works, scenes of wine-drinking, dancing, and other forms of revelry are similar to favorite decorations on Greek and Roman vases in pottery and precious metal.

Relief fragment with large scale vine and inscription referring to daughters of Akhenaten ca. 1353-1336 B.C. New Kingdom, Amarna Period This relief was discovered in the Sanctuary area of the Great Aten Temple at Amarna. Beneath a structure hung with vines inscriptions refer to the figures who were depicted below. To the far right the king's title faces the queen's title to the left. Two columns following refer to a princess - "the king's daughter of his own body whom he loves ............, born of the great royal wife whom he loves Nefertiti. The second set of columns at the left edge refer to a second princess with exactly the same titularies.The organization of the inscriptions suggests the scene depicted a bower-like structure with Akhenaten seated to the left, faced by Nefertiti and two of their daughters.. Relief Fragment with a Ship Under Sail ca. 2465-2458 B.C. Old Kingdom On this fragment, part of an immense sail bellies in the wind dwarfing the busy sailors. One man raises the sail, while the two at the bow are probably pilots testing the water with sticks and guiding the boat. Representations of the sacred wedjat eye on the bladelike objects in front of the pilots may magically both protect the boat and help it to "see" its way. A vertical line of inscription reads "Sail well like this, hurry!"This relief has been suggested to date to the reign of Userkaf, whose pyramid complex was at Saqqara. Although variability among the different royal pyramid complexes and problems of preservation prevent us from knowing exactly where a scene like the one depicted here would occur, it is interesting to note that Userkaf's successor Sahure depicted ships in the corridors outside the central court of his pyramid temple, conveying the notion that the court itself constituted a sort of island.This

Fragment of Wall Painting with a Scene of Two Horsemen Slaying a Serpent early 20th century This work, once believed to be a rare example of pre-Mongol painting, was recently shown to have been made with pigments containing modern components. Remarkably, the forger seems to have worked on an arch fragment and chose images evocative of stories in the Shahnama (Book of Kings), including horsemen slaying a snake. No comparable miniature painting is known from archaeological contexts or extant buildings. Elemental analysis by X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF) detected the following modern pigments: emerald green, produced since 1814; chrome yellow, synthetized in the early 19th century; white baryte, used as extender since the late 18th century, and zinc white, produced since the late 18th century.. Headstone from a Sarcophagus 12th-13th century North China The headstone of this sarcophagus is embellished with an acting troupe poised to perform on the balcony of a two-story building. The side panels feature narrative scenes illustrating twenty-four stories of filial piety. A very similar set of engraved illustrations was discovered on the sarcophagus of Pan Dechong (1191-1256), who was buried in 1260 on the grounds of the Yongle Palace, a famous Daoist temple located in southwestern Shanxi Province. Pan was a leading member of the Quanzhen sect of northern Daoism, which advocated the importance of filial behavior, so it is not surprising that the Confucian theme of filial paragons was adopted to decorate his sarcophagus. The significance of the theatrical troupe is still unclear.These narrative scenes are a popular manifestation of the subject matter and fine-line drawing style of the scholar-artist Li Gonglin (ca. 1041-1106), particularly his Classic of Filial Piety of around 108

Relief attributed to Petamenophis ca. 710-640 BC Late Period, Kushite-early Saite The sunk relief depicts the large figure of a man with short-cropped hair. He wears a sash across his chest, a broad collar and a large amulet. The sash denotes a lector priest who reads hymns and spells during rituals.The relief is close to one in Brussels that originated in the tomb of Petamenophis at Thebes and the sash accords with one of the individual's titles as Chief Lector Priest, so that the relief has therefore usually been attributed to him. There are differences, however: despite the similarities in dress and appearance, the treatment of the head shape is different, and the misplaced fragment in the face of this relief (a repair that seems to date before 1919) makes it difficult to compare the profiles. Moreover, the sash of a lector priest is hardly restricted to Petamenophis. At any rate, the relief certainly fits the style of the Kushite Period at Thebes, but until it can be compared with

Fragment of a sculptured statue base depicting an Asiatic prisoner ca. 1300-1250 B.C. New Kingdom, Ramesside Ancient Egyptian artists expressed the might of the pharaoh through a variety of images. One of these is the image of the pharaoh standing or enthroned above the bodies of foreigner captives. This fragment of a statue base shows the head and shoulder of a Syrian who is characterized by long strands of hair confined by a headband, a beard and mustache, and a fringed mantle embroidered with rosettes. The complete figure lay flat on his belly, his back pressed down by the reed mat on which the king stood. It is likely that captives from four different ethnic groups adorned each of the four corners of the statue base. The Syrian was at the rear corner. The adjacent blank face of the stone continued upward, forming an upright slab (or back pillar) behind the figure of the king.. Fragment of a Wall Painting with a Fox or a Dog (and Painted Layers). Date: 12th century.This mural fragment was found during a museum excavation among the debris of a bathhouse, together with other depictions of quadrupeds, birds, and human figures. It demonstrates the complexity of the techniques employed in medieval times, which waslargely unknown to early twentieth-century forgers. The paintings are executed with a sure hand, first applying the main colors and later outlining the designs, on a humid to dry plaster. The pigments' wide-ranging components suggest that a standardized palette had not yet been developed. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

German-born photographer and scholar Max Hutzel (1911-1988) photographed in Italy from the early 1960s until his death. The result of this project, referred to by Hutzel as Foto Arte Minore, is thorough documentation of art historical development in Italy up to the 18th century, including objects of the Etruscans and the Romans, as well as early Medieval, Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque monuments. Images are organized by geographic region in Italy, then by province, city, site complex and monument.

Panel from Model Cooking Stove: Fairy Feeding Lingzhi Fungus to a Dragon, 100-1 BC. China, from a tomb in Xi'an, Shanxi province, Western Han dynasty (202 BC-AD 9). Earthenware with impressed relief decoration; Han dynasty tombs were often furnished with grave goods to provide the deceased with items for the afterlife. This panel with a dragon was part of a miniature pottery stove to be placed in a burial chamber. This scene of a dragon being fed fungus by a winged fairy is molded on the panel. The dragon is an auspicious creature and an animal of the cardinal directions that protects the east.
