Funerary Statuette naming Teshnefer 332-30 BC Ptolemaic Period This mummiform figure resembles representations of the human-headed Imsety, one of the four sons of Horus. The manner of decoration, with gilded face, red shroud, and extravagant floral collar, is found on some Ptolemaic examples of the funerary god such as 12.182.37b, as well as on much larger Ptah-Sokar-Osiris figures like 21.9.1.The name of the god here, however, is given as Hekes, who is unknown, possibly garbled. But the owner's name and filiation are clear: Teshnefer, son of Pmerweret, born of Theset.. Funerary Statuette naming Teshnefer. 332-30 BC. Wood, gesso, paint, gilding. Ptolemaic Period. From Egypt

Estate Figure. Dimensions: H. 112 cm (44 1/8 in.); W. 17 cm (6 11/16 in.); D. 46.7 cm (18 3/8 in.). Dynasty: Dynasty 12. Reign: early reign of Amenemhat I. Date: ca. 1981-1975 B.C..This masterpiece of Egyptian wood carving was discovered in a hidden chamber at the side of the passage leading into the rock cut tomb of the royal chief steward Meketre, who began his career under King Nebhepetre Mentuhotep II of Dynasty 11 and continued to serve successive kings into the early years of Dynasty 12. Together with a second, very similar female figure (now in the Egyptian Museum, Cairo) this statue flanked the group of twenty two models of gardens, workshops, boats, and a funeral procession that were crammed into the chamber's narrow space. Striding forward with her left leg, the woman carries on her head a basket filled with cuts of meat. In her right hand she holds a live duck by its wings. The figure's iconography is well known from reliefs of the Old Kingdom in which rows of offering bea

Statuette of a Youth Putting on His Cuirass. Unknown 490-470 B.C. On this Etruscan bronze statuette, a young warrior puts on his armor. He grasps the shoulder flaps of his cuirass, pulling them forward in order to fasten them. The artist represented the cuirass in great detail, with rows of punched circles and semi-circles ornamenting its surface and a double row of pteryges or flaps along its lower edge. Peeking out from underneath the cuirass is the decorated hem of the youth's short tunic. The form of the statuette's base indicates that this youth once decorated the top of a candelabrum. The style of both the base and the youth's face suggest that the statuette was made in the city of Vulci.

Head Attributed to Arsinoe II 278-270 B.C. Ptolemaic Period This small head was created in the early part of the reign of the Macedonian Greek Ptolemies and is believed to depict Arsinoe II (278-270 B.C.), sister/wife of Ptolemy II, one of a line of religiously and politically important Ptolemaic queens. The delicate arc created by her brow bone over narrow slightly slanted eyes with long thin extensions is a style very closely related to that of Dynasty 30, the last of the traditional Egyptian pharaonic dynasties. The early Ptolemies made great efforts to show themselves as the inheritors of the pharaohs who had preceded them, continuing their building projects and closely adopting their style. At the same time, Ptolemaic queens served a much more prominent role in the monarchy than did the queens of Dynasty 30, who are virtually unknown. Images of Arsinoe were created for a variety of contexts and depict her also in strongly Hellenistic style (2002.66; 26.7.1017) and. in her posthumou

Between 700 and 900 CE, the Ife Kingdom developed as a major artistic center. The city was a settlement of substantial size between the 9th and 12th centuries, with houses featuring potsherd pavements. Ife is known worldwide for its ancient and naturalistic bronze, stone and terracotta sculptures, which reached their peak of artistic expression between 1200 and 1400 A.D. After this period, production declined as political and economic power shifted to the nearby kingdom of Benin which, like the Yoruba kingdom of Oyo, developed into a major empire. Bronze and terracotta art created by this civilization and significant examples of realism in early African art.
