The subject of the obverse is unusual and has posed difficulties of identification. The depiction of Sarpedon being transported by Sleep and Death to his native Lycia for burial originated in Athens, possibly with the painter Euphronios, and it assumed some currency on vases. With the numerous props indicating the abode of Zeus and Hera and of the enthroned Europa, the Apulian vase likely represents a specific theatrical interpretation. Terracotta Nolan neck-amphora (jar) ca. 480-470 B.C. Attributed to the Brygos Painter Obverse, Eos pursuing TithonosReverse, boy fleeingTithonos on his way to school pursued by Eos, the goddess of dawn, appears to particular effect here, thanks in part to the handling of the shape. The Nolan amphora offers large areas of black glaze that not only set off the figures but even evoke the darkness before dawn. The continuous ornament contributes to the impression of motion around the vase.. Terracotta Panathenaic prize amphora (jar) ca. 560-550 B.C. Signed by Nikias Obverse, Athena, with this inscription: one of the prizes from Athens. Nikias made meReverse, footrace, with this inscription: stadion race of menFrom the second quarter of the sixth century B.C. on, victors in the contests of the Panathenaic festival in Athens were awarded a standardized amphora containing one metretes (about forty-two quarts) of olive oil from sacred groves in Attica. The official decoration on the front was a picture of a statue of Athena, fully armed. The scene on the back showed the event for which the prize was awarded. This is the earliest Panathenaic amphora in the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art. It is also one of the earliest of those dated between 566 and 550 B.C., a period of some experimentation. The canonic ornaments for the neck and shoulder and even the placement of the official prize inscription did not become established until the last quarter of the sixth centur

Mastoid (Drinking Cup) Made 500 BCE-480 BCE Italy. This cup was shaped to fit easily in the drinkers hand, and was likely used as part of the Greek symposium. Much like modern academic symposiums, in which people discuss a topic of common interest, debunking old theories and putting forth new hypotheses; the men of ancient Athens regularly got together in private homes to exchange ideas. Afterward the participants might continue the conversation, discussing their impressions in greater detail or simply socializing over a drink. As the evening progressed, participants engaged in other pleasures, including games, performances, and sex. Wine played a major role in fueling these evenings, and as such the myriad vessels used in the symposium often paid homage to drink.Here, the god of wine Dionysos rides astride a donkey. Four lively figures move to the right across the front side of this stamnos, a vase used for storing and mixing wine. First comes a finely dressed woman playing the pipes, followed by three male figures, all nearly nude. The bearded one holds a drinking cup and reaches back, perhaps dancing, while the last in line concentrates on the music of his lyre. Attributed to the Shuvalov Painter Two boys at thymiaterion (incense burner)The special shape of this oinochoe indicates that it had some connection with the Anthesteria, the celebration of the new wine in which children and the god Dionysos figured prominently. The youth at the left replaces the cover of the thymiaterion after filling it with incense; he needs to stand on tiptoe. His companion extends his hand to help if necessary. His workshop seems to have been located in Vulci, where a high proportion of his works have also been found. His style is distinctive because he gives the impression of painting his subjects with glaze, now more tightly, often quite loosely. Though shot by Paris, the arrow was guided to its mark by Apollo. After Achilles fell, a fierce conflict erupted for possession of his body. While Odysseus kept the Trojans at bay, Ajax carried the corpse back to the Greek encampment. Depictions of Ajax bearing his fully armed comrade always emphasize Achilles' weight.
