Since they are armed with spears, they appear to be setting out for a hunt. Terracotta neck-amphora (jar) ca. 540-530 B.C. Attributed to a painter of the Princeton Group Obverse, Herakles; reverse, Geryon. On the neck, obverse and reverse, a flute-player leading a procession of youths and menOne of the labors of Herakles was to obtain the cattle of Geryon, a creature composed of three fully-armed bodies. Geryon lived on an island in the far west with his herdsman, Eurytion, and dog, Orthros. Here, Herakles takes aim with his arrow against Geryon, one of whose bodies is falling. The subject was popular in the sixth century B.C.; several representations in stone can be seen in the Cypriot galleries on the second floor. The vase is exceptional for its broad and sharply tapering shape that lacks a foot. This vase illustrates a craft for which virtually no evidence survives, that of applying pigment to stone sculpture using the technique of encaustic. The column and phiale (libation bowl) at the far left indicate an interior space, probably a sanctuary. In the foreground stands a statue of Herakles with his club, bow, and lion-skin. The painter, characterized by his cap and his garment worn to leave his upper body bare, applies a mixture of pigment and wax with a spatula to Herakles' lion-skin. To the left, an African boy tends the brazieron which rods are heating that will spread the tinted wax. Compared with work by the Painter of Boulogne 441 Obverse, AthenaReverse, chariot raceFrom the second quarter of the sixth century B.C. on, victors in the contests for the Panathenaic festival in Athens were awarded a standardized vase containing one metretes (about forty-two quarts) of olive oil from sacred olive groves in Attica. The official decoration on the front was a picture of a statue of Athena, fully armed, standing between two columns. The event for which the vase was awarded was illustrated on the back. This vase was the prize of a victor in the prestigious chariot race.. Reverse, three youthsThe representation shows a stage structure at the far right and the characters of a phlyax play, a type of farce favored in Southern Italy. A recent interpretation characterizes the two male figures in the center as accomplices about to steal the hag's goose and kid or to defy her threats to turn them in. Written in Attic Greek, the inscriptions indicate that the farce originated in mainland Greece but do not explain the story. Date: ca. 500 B.C..Helios (the Sun) rises in his quadriga (4-horse chariot); above, Nyx (Night) driving away to the left and Eos (the goddess of dawn) to the right; Herakles offering sacrifice at altar.The four lekythoi grouped here are all attributed to the same painter and are said to have been found together in a tomb in Attica. Three of them are decorated with subjects that may have seemed especially suitable for funerary offerings because they show figures moving beyond the confines of the known world. This vase shows a scene that must be related to Herakles' journey to the west, outside the ring of ocean that encircled the earth. Traveling in the bowl of the sun, he reached an otherworldly place where he had to kill the monster Geryon, a creature similar to Hades, the god of the underworld. Here Herakles offers a sacrifice to Helios as the sun rises. Museum

His vitality is abundantly evident on this vasenot only in the drawing but also in the interpretation of the figures. The maenad purposefully brandishes her thyrsos (fennel stalk) and snake. At the same time, she is serene and beautifully dressed in a pleated chiton and a nebris (fawn's skin). Crouching unconcerned between two palmettes, a satyr enjoys grapes in their unfermented state.. Although the name is not otherwise attested in this form, it may refer to Agias, or Hegias, of Troizen, mentioned in ancient literature as the author of the Nostoi, a poem now lost that narrated the return from Troy of various Greek heroes. The Attic pieces come from the workshop of the Haimon Painter, a prolific producer of lekythoi (oil flasks) as well as skyphoi (deep drinking cups). Although the fabric of this cup has the pink hue characteristic of Attic clay, the misfiring of the interior and its execution resemble the Boeotian examples.The interpretation of the well-established subject of Achilles and Troilos on the exterior suggests a painter unfamiliar with the canonical story. Attic Black-Figure Hydria Fragment. Unknown about 530 B.C. The fragments 86.AE.118.1-.4 preserve parts of a hydrias mouth, shoulder and body. On the shoulder: a duel flanked by two warriors. This fragment gives the central part of the scene (and joins 86.AE.118.2). On the left, legs and part of the shield of a warrior. Beside him, a hoplite collapses to left, looking back (shield blazon: bulls head). His victorious opponent advances to left (one leg, edge of shield and part of spear preserved). On the body, a quadriga turning to right, driven by a charioteer with a fillet in his hair and wearing a long white chiton. The warrior in the chariot is largely hidden, but wears a cuirass and Corinthian helmet. He holds two spears and carries a Boeotian shield on his back. Before the quadriga, an Amazon running to right (only her lower legs are preserved). Behind the chariot, another Amazon flees to left but looks back. She has an Attic helmet, cuirass, sword and round shield (blazon: balls) T
