Attributed to the Berlin Painter Youth playing lyre and boy listeningThe chous (pl. choes) served to take wine from a krater and poured into a drinking cup. It was also the shape associated with the Dionysiac festival called the Anthesteria in which the new wine was celebrated. Children were a major part of the festivities, and a large number of choes depict them. While this vase need not be directly connected with the festival, the combination of shape and subject certainly evokes it.. The psykter emerged at the end of the sixth century B.C. and had a short and rare existence. Its distinctive shape allowed it to contain wine and remain upright in a krater filled with cold water or snow. In the present piece, the krater has a double wall; openings at the top and bottom of the body allowed cold water to be poured in and to flow out.The figural scenes show Dionysos, god of wine, and Herakles, the hero and protégé of Athena, on Mount Olympos, the home of the gods. Their cult included mysteries whose introduction is ascribed to the goddess Demeter. A distinctive variety of pottery, known as Cabiric vases, was produced from the late fifth through the late fourth century B.C. This example is characteristic in shape, subject, and technique. Such works may reflect farces performed in conjunction with the mysteries. They are contemporary with representations of Middle Comedy and the phlyax vases. Poseidon, seeing the Greeks hard-pressed, decided to help renew their valor. At his underwater palace, he ordered his chariot prepared so that he could ride to their aid. On one side of this cup, an atmosphere of feverish excitement reigns in the stables as grooms attempt to soothe four high-strung horses tethered to columns. Supernatural forces seem to have been unleashed: tiny figures race over the horses' backs and swing down from the architectural frieze above. The fawn running beside her is present not only as an attribute but also as an indication of the goddess's swiftness. As this work indicates, he was well familiar with Attic conventions. Of note in this representation is the kerykeion (herald's staff) on the side of the herm. The kerykeion is one of the attributes of Hermes, the messenger god who also presided over boundaries. On the front of this monumental vase, the hero Herakles strides to the left, sword in hand, grabbing the hair of Nessos, a centaur who had tried to abduct Herakles' wife, Deianeira. The two components of the centaurhorse and manare not well integrated in this early representation, but the creature shows emotion, pleading for mercy with outstretched hands. Behind Herakles, a four-horse chariot and a driver wait patiently for the outcome of the battle, while a small man attracted by the excitement rushes forward. Greek, Attic Telephos, Orestes, and ClytemnestraTelephos, king of Mysia, was wounded by the Greek hero Achilles during the Greeks' first offensive against Troy. The Delphic oracle told Telephos that he could be healed only by the offending weapon. In an attempt to secure Achilles' help, he sought out Orestes, the young son of Agamemnon, and threatened to kill him. Achilles finally heeded Telephos' entreaties and furnished scrapings of his spear that healed the festering wound.The story of Telephos was the subject of a play by Euripides performed in 438 B.C. The unusually large shape is subdivided into three zones, each with a mythological subject. The middle zone features Thetis and her sister Nereids bringing armor to replace the set that Achilles had given Patroklos. The lower zone depicts Theseus and Hippolyte in combat among Greeks and Amazons. In both cases, the subject concerns a woman in martial mode and a warrior. The uppermost scene has been interpreted as the abduction of Persephone but more likely shows a god (or goddess) departing on a mission of divine intervention.
