Date: ca. 510-500 B.C..Obverse, youth with sword pursuing womanReverse, Dionysos and satyrsThe male figure on the obverse has been interpreted as Perseus, the women as possibly daughters of the sea god Nereus. The representation on the reverse is most interesting for the goat that has a satyr-like face. Gesturing casually, he seems to be in communication with the youth in front of him who has a wreath and scepter. The protagonist is difficult to identify. His comfortable seat and the disparity between his feet suggest that he is Hephaistos. However, his youth, wreath, and flowing hair are more appropriate to Dionysos. Terracotta hydria (water jar) ca. 420-410 B.C. Attributed to the manner of the Meidias Painter Thamyris and the MusesVases associated with the Meidias Painter are often exceptionally interesting iconographically and very poorly preserved. Thamyris was a mythological musician who boasted that he could sing more beautifully than the Muses. He was blinded for his arrogance. While some representations reflect his fate, this hydria is among those that do not. Thamyris appears in an outdoor setting among music-making women and Erotes. Particularly noteworthy is a small platform beneath his feet with three figures of diminishing size. It is noteworthy that the subject is popular on vases of the second half of the sixth century. The implication is that this task was not considered menial. Furthermore, while there were a variety of genre scenes showing menpreparing for battle, participating in symposia, etc.--this is one of the few specific to women.

In the air between them are Circe's magic wand and the skyphos (deep drinking cup) that contains the potion with which she transforms men into animals. It may be a symbol of the inevitability of death. The handles are ribbon-like and include so-called Herakles knots, a square knot symbolic of love and power in the ancient world. Perseus accomplished his mission with the help of Athena, Hermes and the Nymphs, and returned to the island of Seriphos whence he had set out. By the mid-fifth century B.C., the story and the motif of the Gorgon's head had become popular in Attic art. Perseus looks unwaveringly at his protectress, Athena as he is about to behead the sleeping Medusa. Attributed to the Deepdene Painter Obverse, King Akrisios watching his daughter Danae and her son Perseus who stand in a chest about to be set adrift Reverse, Danae's seated mother, a standing servant with basket, and a carpenter holding a hammerWhen King Akrisios of Argos was informed by an oracle that his grandson would kill him, he locked away his daughter Danaë. Nevertheless, Zeus came to her as a shower of gold and Perseus was born. The king had Danaë and Perseus put into a wooden chest and set adrift to die at sea. After many adventures, including his beheading of Medusa the Gorgon, Perseus returned to Argos and fulfilled the prophecy. The figure work on the neck constitutes a crowning frieze. The ribbing on the body introduces a pronounced verticality, and the crisp forms of the stand establish a podium. Terracotta lekythos (oil flask) Attributed to the manner of Douris ca. 480-470 BCE NikeNike, the personification of victory, lends herself particularly well to the tall, rather narrow shape of a lekythos. The subject was common during the first decades of the fifth century B.C., undoubtedly in response to the Greek victory over the Persians.

Terracotta hydria: kalpis (water jar). Culture: Greek, Attic. Dimensions: H. 17 5/8 in. (44.7 cm); diameter mouth 7 in. (17.8 cm); diameter foot 6 1/4 in. (15.8 cm). Date: early 4th century B.C..Poseidon and Amymone surrounded by Eros, Apollo, Dionysos, and attendantsAmymone was attacked by a satyr and rescued by the sea god Poseidon who, however, took her for himself. Her name was given to a spring that welled up where Poseidon struck the ground with his trident. In this scene, Eros seems to preside over a harmonious gathering of Dionysos with his followers and Poseidon, who occupies the center of the scene with Amymone standing beside him. Onetorides, the youth who is praised as fair on this vase, is known principally from works attributed to Exekias. The hydria, therefore, links several contemporary artistic strands.. Terracotta squat lekythos (oil flask). Culture: Greek, Attic. Dimensions: 6 3/16 × 2 3/4 in. (15.7 × 7 cm). Date: ca. 420 B.C..Philoktetes on LemnosThe painter, as yet unidentified, has created an exceptionally expressive composition on this vase. It concerns Philoktetes, a Greek hero who inherited the arrows of Herakles, thus their prominence here. In the story of the Trojan War, these arrows were necessary for the conquest of the city. On the way from Greece, Philoktetes was bitten by a snake that had caused such a painful and foul-smelling wound that he had to be left on the island of Lemnos. Philoktetes, downcast, sits under a barren tree and holds his bandaged foot--a picture of utter despondency. Ultimately, he will be rescued and healed. Attributed to the manner of the Sappho Painter Herakles and Apollo contesting the Delphic tripod, with Artemis and AthenaA favored subject during the third quarter of the sixth century B.C. was the struggle between Herakles and Apollo for the Delphic tripod. The most significant depiction in the Museum's collection appears on a very early red-figure amphora of about 530 B.C. signed by the potter Andokides; it is exhibited in the Greek galleries on the main floor.
