Coffin fragment of Pakherenkhonsu Third Intermediate Period ca. 750-700 B.C. Fragments of three nested anthropoid coffins and a cartonnage case for the Doorkeeper of the House of Amun, Pakherenkhonsu, were found in a pit (Pit 1) in Tomb MMA 832, a reunsed tomb of Dynasty 11 that contained material from a number of later burials. This board, bearing an ink sketch of Pakherenkhonsu himself, comes from the head end of the middle coffin box.Pakherenkhonsu is shown here as an older man, with a bald head and a few extra pounds, attesting to his sedentary occupation. In his right hand is a broom, perhaps a symbol of his priestly rank and temple duties.The freehand drawing, a masterpiece of Egyptian art, captures the essence of the living person with a minimum of detail. It belongs to a group of statues and reliefs made at Thebes in Dynasty 25, which use the rules of traditional Egyptian art to achieve startlingly realistic effects. View more. A Young Man Attending to a Falcon early 17th century The original width of this textile would have contained at least four figures backtoback in mirror image. A young man, dressed in a voluminous turban and short jacket, attends to a falcon. Sumptuous effect and extra texture are achieved through the incorporation of foilwrapped silk loops in selected areas such as the falconer’s collar. Tissue fragment in tapestry, anonymous, c. 900 - c. 1099 Natural linen tissue fragment with woven silk decoration in tapisserie technique of five tires in which different motifs. The middle band has small leaf motifs in dark blue, light blue and yellow with brown outline, with a dotted motif in blue around it. The narrow border comes together at the bottom and ends in a drop motif. The tires to the left and right of this, in the same hue, have a motif of successive hearts, some of which with small leaf work and frame. Both tires have a coincidence that also ends in a drop motif. The outer tires have a consecutive motif of a stylized flower, interspersed with a geometric motif. Tomb of Ramesses III, Pharaoh of the Twentieth Dynasty in Ancient Egypt. reigned from 1186 to 1155 BC and is considered to be the last monarch of the New Kingdom to wield any substantial authority over Egypt. Tomb KV11 is located in the main valley of the Valley of the Kings. The tomb has been open since antiquity, and has been known variously as Bruce's Tomb (named after James Bruce who entered the tomb in 1768) and The Harper's Tomb (due to paintings of two blind harpers in the tomb).

Square with Holy Warriors Spearing a Serpent 7th-8th century Silk, one of the most luxurious fibers used to create textiles, is made from the cocoon filaments produced by several species of moth. Originating from China, Central Asia, and India, silk first reached the Mediterranean during the Roman period via a network of land and sea trade routes. Byzantine domestic silk production began in A.D. 553-54, under Justinian I, when silk-moth eggs were introduced to the region; the silk industry eventually became a major element of the Byzantine economy.This fragment depicts a male figure dressed in a tunic with a pallium draped over his shoulders. He holds a cross in one hand and a pike in the other, which he uses to keep a serpent at bay. A border of leaves and flowers frames the images. An identical, though complete, example is housed in the Musée des Tissus et des Arts Décoratifs, Lyon. Bands such as these were woven separately as decorative elements and were applied to garments.. Ostracon with fighting bulls ca. 1295-1070 B.C. New Kingdom, Ramesside Ostraca (plural for ostracon) are potsherds used as surfaces for writing or drawing. By extension, the term is applied to chips of limestone which were employed for similar purposes. Figural ostraca vary from sketches of a single feature to polychrome painted compositions. They were used to practice drawing, draft compositions, and copy scenes. However, some ostraca were created for more durable functions, used as cult images in religious practice and deposited at tombs or shrines as sites of access to the divine. Ostraca on which animals appear acting as humans have been variously interpreted as playful jokes, political satire, or illustrations to fables or myths in the oral tradition.This ostracon is a dynamic depiction of two fighting bulls. The powerful motion is portrayed through their bodies, with the back legs of the charging bull pushing forward and head lowered to topple the other bull with its horns. Note
