Bronze torso of a youth 1st half of the 5th century B.C. Greek Roman overcast of a Greek bronze statue of the early 5th century B.C.In antiquity most large freestanding statues were made of bronze rather than marble. Hundreds honoring victorious athletes, poets, or generals stood in the great sanctuaries, as well as in civic centers. The majority of these works are lost-melted down at some point in order to reuse the metal. We know something of their appearance because the Romans admired many of the well-known statues and had them copied in marble, sometimes in bronze. This torso appears to be a bronze replica of a Greek bronze statue dating from the early fifth century B.C. During that period, sculptors were beginning to substitute a more relaxed naturalistic stance for the rigid pose that had been used for a hundred and fifty years to represent a youth. The fact that the left hip seems slightly higher than the right suggests that this figure may have been posed with most of its weigh

Champlevé furniture or cosmetic box plaque with a griffin and a floral frieze ca. 9th-8th century B.C. Assyrian This slightly curved, rectangular plaque depicts a sun-disc crowned griffin, a fantastic animal with the head and wings of an eagle and the body and tail of a lion. The griffin stands on its hind legs, resting its left foreleg on a papyrus flower and raising its right foreleg. Found in a large storeroom at Fort Shalmaneser, a royal building at Nimrud that was used to store booty and tribute collected by the Assyrians while on military campaign, this piece was probably used to decorate a round cosmetic box or as an inlay for a piece of wooden furniture. It is carved in the champlevé technique, characteristic of the Phoenician style, in which recessed spaces cut into the ivory would have been filled with colored inlays. The cloister from which it comes was built as the wealth of the community increased through the visit of pilgrims en route to Santiago de Compostela. On the way, they stopped to venerate the relics of Saint Gaudens, a local shepherd boy who was martyred in the fifth century by the Visigoths, with his mother, Saint Quitterie. Sculpture from the cloister was sold as building material in the wake of the French Revolution. Part of the cloister was reconstructed at Saint-Gaudens in the 1980s. Torso of a Youth 1 CE-200 CE Roman Empire. Greek masterpieces were copied early and often. The statues of the 4th-century B.C. Athenian sculptor Praxiteles were especially influential. His male figures were usually languid, youthful, and sensuous. The standing figures bore the bodyís weight on one taut leg. The other, bent at the knee, was relaxed. The side of the body with the lowered hip had a higher shoulder, resulting in a pronounced S curve. The muscular yet supple body and the opposing diagonal lines of the hips and shoulders of this torso indicate that its sculptor followed Praxitelesís principles. A swath of drapery across its back may have been draped in the front over one or both of the youthís arms.. Marble . Ancient Roman
