Date: 4th century B.C..Among the established types of Tarentine terracottas is that of the mounted horseman. In this example, he is nude, carries a small round shield, and wears an elaborate headdress as is often found on the equally characteristic type of the reclining banqueter. The identities of both the horsemen and the banqueters remain unclear, as does the possibility of a connection between the two. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Scribe statuette. Dimensions: h. 6 cm (2 3/8 in); w. 3.8 cm (1 1/2 in). Date: 332-30 B.C..This is an unusual statuette of a scribe. The features indicate a quite late date - a time when seated scribal statues have gone out of vogue. Preserved on the lap is an inlaid inscription that reads from the direction of the sitter, but only the first word "scribe" is clear. One could conjecture that the pose is adopted in this instance to represent a revered individual from the past who was a scribe such as Imhotep, but this would be a unique occurrence of this pose to depict Imhotep. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Female Figure 12th-9th century B.C. Tlatilco This solid, hand-modeled ceramic figurine is buff in color and painted with a red pigment. She has bulbous thighs and stunted, splayed arms, and a pair of long braids extends down her back. Although the figures navel, mouth, and right ear appear to be pierced (perhaps to support removable jewelry), her only adornment is a coiled necklace that conforms to the thick contours of the neck. Sculpted some three millennia ago in the Valley of Mexico, this figurine belongs to a group of ceramic effigies known collectively as the Tlatilco "pretty ladies." Depicting females with large heads, small waists, and prominent hips, these handheld sculptures present a fairly standardized body type and are typically fired to red, buff, or brown tones. As the popular embodiments of an ideal feminine form, the Tlatilco "pretty ladies" are part of a centuries-long tradition in which eccentricities and religious imagery predominate. Featuring hunchbacks, dwarfs,

Cylinder seal and modern impression: worshiper with an animal offering before a seated deity ca. 1480-1450 B.C. Elamite Although engraved stones had been used as early as the seventh millennium B.C. to stamp impressions in clay, the invention in the fourth millennium B.C. of carved cylinders that could be rolled over clay allowed the development of more complex seal designs. These cylinder seals, first used in Mesopotamia, served as a mark of ownership or identification. Seals were either impressed on lumps of clay that were used to close jars, doors, and baskets, or they were rolled onto clay tablets that recorded information about commercial or legal transactions. The seals were often made of precious stones. Protective properties may have been ascribed to both the material itself and the carved designs. Seals are important to the study of ancient Near Eastern art because many examples survive from every period and can, therefore, help to define chronological phases. Often preserving
