Emilia-Romagna Ferrara Ferrara Museo Civico di Schifanoia03. Hutzel, Max 1960-1990 General Notes: INCOMPLETE RECORD--NEGATIVES PROCESSED, PRINTS FILED German-born photographer and scholar Max Hutzel (1911-1988) photographed in Italy from the early 1960s until his death. The result of this project, referred to by Hutzel as Foto Arte Minore, is thorough documentation of art historical development in Italy up to the 18th century, including objects of the Etruscans and the Romans, as well as early Medieval, Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque monuments. Images are organized by geographic region in Italy, then by province, city, site complex and monument.

Inlay for a Mirror or Box: Lady on a Bird, c. 900-1000. China, Tang dynasty (618-907) - Song dynasty (960-1279). Beaten silver with chased details; overall: 5.3 x 8.4 cm (2 1/16 x 3 5/16 in.). The p'ing-t'o technique of inlaying gold and silver foil on lacquer produced luxurious articles of elegance and fragility. These stray silver inlays were originally mounted on a mirror back or a cosmetic box whose lacquered surface has disintegrated. They combine auspicious symbols of Indian and Chinese origin--human-headed birds whose melodies filled the Buddhist paradise, and bird-riding deities who inhabited the skies of Taoist mythology. Like these imaginary beings, the lions were probably paired in a radial design; at least one has been lost.

Theatrical Masks and Ram Vessel for Offering A.D. 2nd century Roman Period These three pieces are said to have been part of a find of numerous faience objects at Arsinoe, capital of the Fayum region. The masks are too small and brittle to have served as actual theater masks. They refer to the god Dionysus, patron of the theater and god of rebirth; in Egypt he was equated with Osiris. Terracotta theater masks are found in burials and sanctuaries in Greece, in sanctuaries and as garden decorations in Italy. In Egypt, they are known only from burials, as offerings to Osiris/Dionysus. Terracotta masks from Antinoopolis in Middle Egypt probably originate in tombs, and a terracotta theater mask was found in a Roman Period chapel over a burial at Hawara. The charming ram in the second view, with its almost prehensile muzzle, feeds from a lotus-form trough. The traditional Egyptian gods Amun or Khnum were identified with curly-horned rams, but by this time several other divinities were as well.

Mantle ("The Paracas Textile") Nasca. Mantle ("The Paracas Textile"), 100-300 C.E. Cotton, camelid fiber, 24 5/8 × 58 11/16 in. (62.5 × 149 cm). This extraordinarily complex mantle, or cloak, is one of the most renowned Andean textiles in the world. It was most likely used as a ceremonial object. The ninety figures decorating the border, created by needle knitting, have been interpreted as a microcosm of life on Perus South Coast two thousand years ago, with a particular focus on agriculture. Many of the images illustrate native flora and fauna as well as cultivated plants. Costumed figures may represent humans impersonating gods and acting as intermediaries between the real and supernatural worlds. Severed human trophy heads are shown as germinating seeds, suggesting the practice of ritual sacrifice and the interconnected cycles of birth and death. Statue of the Vizier Iuy ca. 1700 B.C. Second Intermediate Period Wooden statues were common in ancient Egypt but preserved less often than their counterparts in stone. This figure is a spectacular example of a statue of a wealthy official, whose robust frame and long, elaborate garment (note the fringe carved at the top of the dress across his back) identify his successful career. The name of the owner is not preserved, but the statue was found close to a tomb that contained coffin fragments inscribed for the mayor and vizier Yuy. A small limestone figure wearing the same kind of kilt (23.3.38) was found together with this piece, as were two "Tell el-Jahudiyeh" vessels (23.3.39 and 23.3.40).. Statue of the Vizier Iuy. ca. 1700 B.C.. Wood. Second Intermediate Period. From Egypt, Upper Egypt, Thebes, Deir el-Bahri, Tomb of Iuy (MMA 61), On surface near tomb, MMA excavations, 1922-23. Medallion with the Face of Christ. Culture: Polish. Dimensions: Overall: 3 1/4 x 1 5/16 in. (8.2 x 3.3 cm). Date: ca. 1380-1400.Carved from amber, a honey-colored fossilized pine resin, this luminous image seems to echo medieval prayers that praise the Face of Jesus, shining with "the semblance of divine splendor." Europe's amber trade was controlled by the Teutonic Knights, whose castles dominated the Baltic coast. Amber carvers made rosary beads and, occasionally, for princely patrons, statuettes of saints or holy images like this one, framed in silver or ivory. Only two other examples survive, both with silver frames. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.
