Marble statue of a togatus (man wearing a toga) 1st century A.D. Roman This man wears a tunic and over it a toga, the most characteristic Roman dress. The toga, a length of woolen cloth with rounded edges, had been the traditional garment of the Romans for centuries, but by the late first century B.C., it was declining in popularity. As part of his effort to revive ancient values and customs, the emperor Augustus made the toga a sort of unofficial state dress that all citizens were required to wear in the forum. A cylindrical leather box for scrolls, represented at the feet of this figure, identify him as a man engaged in public business. A portrait head and arms were carved separately and added.. The best preserved example is a bronze in the British Museum. Much of the intellectual intensity of the portrait is conveyed in the figures face. The body language—the crossed legs, the position of the left arm in the himation (cloak), and the forward-leaning pose— adds to the evocation of a man deep in thought. According to one interpretation, this work depicts the Stoic philosopher Kleanthes of Assos (331-232 B.C.), the foremost pupil of Zeno.. Togatus Figure, AD 1-200. Italy, Roman. Pentelic marble; overall: 167.7 x 63.5 x 40.6 cm (66 x 25 x 16 in.). From 1929 until 1973, this toga-clad body was displayed with a portrait head of Vespasian (recarved from Nero) that did not originally belong to it. Several details indicate a mismatch: the surfaces and proportions differ, and the head projected awkwardly forward even after modern recarving of the neck to fit into the body cavity. Aspects of the toga also suggest that it was sculpted later than the head.

Large Herculaneum Woman, 1st century, AD. The statue was probably from an honorific monument for a local woman at Herculaneum. It deploys one of the most popular designs for female portrait statues under the Roman Empire. More than 150 versions survive. The woman has an ideal beauty and is modestly veiled.

On the rear elevation, Atlas shoulders a celestial globe - of which this is the scale model (without the globe) - with Temperance and Vigilance at his side. On the front elevation, Peace is flanked by the virtues Wisdom and Justice. The message expressed here is that universal peace, on earth and in heaven, depends on these four virtues.

Indian Girl, or The Dawn of Christianity 1853-56; carved 1855-56 Erastus Dow Palmer American In a letter to his patron Hamilton Fish, Palmer outlined the symbolic program for The Indian Girl, or The Dawn of Christianity: "A young Indian Maiden wandering listlessly in her native forest gathering bird-plumes finds a crucifix, which impressive emblem she, seeing for the first time, gazes upon with wonder and compassion." Palmer directed the seminude girls attention toward the found object, which she cradles in her elevated right hand. Her left hand, holding the forgotten feathers, rests limply at her side. Left- Marble statuette of Athena. Perhaps from Asia Minor, late 2nd c. BC The goddess is represented in sleeved chiton, girdled high on the waist and an aegis with relief gorgoneion on her bosom. Right -Marble statuette of Zeus. Perhaps from Asia Minor, late 2nd c. BC. The god, identified by the eagle by his left leg, is represented himation-clad with raised left hand, in which he most probably held a sceptre, while with his right he proffers possibly a phiale. The statuette belongs in a broad category of works of the late Hellenistic period.

Jephtha's Daughter 1874 United States. This sculpture by Chauncey Bradley Ives presents a character from the Old Testament book of Judges. An Israelite leader engaged in war against the Ammonites, Jephtha made a promise to God that if his army was victorious, he would sacrifice whoever met him upon his return home from battle. Jephthaís army prevailed, but when he arrived at his house, he was met by his only child, a virgin daughter. Here we see the young woman grieving over her imminent death, her tambourine stilled and her head and shoulders drooping with the weight of her knowledge.
