Dated 750 B.C.Standing cup with cover 17th century Possibly by workshop of Lorenz Zick The technique of forming objects on a lath, or turning, reached a high degree of complexity in the Renaissance and Baroque eras, when French, Italian, and Central European workshops produced paper-thin hollowed-out shapes from single blocks of ivory. Clerics and noblemen embraced turning as a hobby. Among the rulers who collected masterpieces of turning for their Kunstkammern and practiced the art themselves were the Holy Roman Emperors Maximilian II (r. 1564-76), Rudolf II (r. 1576-1612), and Ferdinand III (r. 1619-37). The eccentric form of one of these cups exemplifies Mannerist taste in Central Europe, though the most challenging aspect of its creation was concocting the lacy hollows that form the stem and spire.. Date: ca. 1390-1353 B.C..This is the upper part of a jar that would have been over twice the height. A complete jar would have a complex profile, somewhat similar to a figure 8, with this beaker shaped upper section joined at the waist to a wide slightly shouldered jar. The piece has an overall white slip, and then is painted mainly with vegetal motifs in blue, with touches of black and red, characteristic of Egyptian "blue-painted ware" of this period. The preserved neck has a relief Hathor emblem on opposite sides. The goddess face was probably formed by pressing the clay into a mold formed for the purpose - the pressure of fingers can be seen on the interior of the jar. The Hathor face wears a blue straight wig, bound at intervals by red ribbon. On the other sides are bound papyrus motifs between animal-headed sceptSilver gilt skyphos, from Strelca, Pazardjik Region, Bulgaria. Goldsmith art. The Wari Empire dominated the south-central highlands and the west coastal regions of what is now Peru from 500-1000 A.D. The Tiwanaku occupied the altiplano (high plain) directly south of Wari-populated areas around the same time, including territory now part of the modern country of Bolivia. The cultures not only developed and flourished as contemporaries, but also occupied adjacent lands for nearly four centuries. A Wari ceremonial center called Cerro Baúl was located a mere five miles from Tiwanaku-settled fields in the Moquegua Valley of Peru. The two cultures likely encountered each other at Cerro Baúl and elsewhere, but the nature of these interactions remains largely unknown.
