Crib of oak, with corner styles and decorations on Frisian and panels, anonymous, 1600 Crib of oak. The corner styles are formed at the front by Corinthian columns and at the rear by scanned pilasters. The main frame has a Frisian, classified by consoles with lions. Those on the corners at the front wear coats of arms, the other festons or a weapon trophy. Grotesken put on the panels. As grands grew wider to accommodate more keys, pedals, which had been mounted on the legs, were moved to a mounting in the center of the keyboard. The left pedal of this 5-1/2 octave grand shifts the action sideways in 2 steps for una and due corde effects. Center and right pedals lift the bass and treble dampers. Steel buttresses span the hammer gap to prevent string tension from pulling the tuning pin block inward. But the hitchpin rail cracked, necessitating repair with a brass plate. Although pictorial sources show that stools were the most frequently used seats, especially for women, they have not survived in great numbers. Within the hierarchy of seating furniture, stools occupied a relatively low position and social status was reflected in who used the tall armchairs versus those who sat on side chairs, stools or benches.
