Head of Jupiter. Artist: Filippo Rega (Italian, active Rome and Naples, born Chieti, Italy 1761-after 1842). Culture: Italian, Naples. Dimensions: Overall (confirmed): 2 1/16 x 1 3/4 in. (5.3 x 4.4 cm); 52.9 x 44.3 x 15 mm. Date: early 19th century.Filippo Rega, son of an antiques dealer in Naples who sent him to Rome to study with the Pichlers (see 39.22.42, .45, .46) returned to Naples and settled there. This monumental, rounded head emerges from subtly graduated, cloudlike mauve hues. In ancient Rome, there was a high demand for colorful glass that could dazzle banquet guests alongside the expensive silver and gold serving wares meant to impress. Fragments like this one would have once been a part of larger mosaic dishes. The mosaic pattern was made by sagging molten glass into bowl-shaped molds, a technique used on many of these fragments is similar to millefiori, ìthousand flowersî in Italian, a modern glass-making method in which tiny rods of colored glass are bundled together, wrapped in a sheet of glass, fused, and then thinly sliced to reveal swirls of a flower-like patterns. Middle Kingdom Administrative changes during Dynasty 12 lead to an increase in bureaucracy and, subsequently, in the production and use of seals. This is reflected in the beginning of the mass production of scarabs, the most popular shape for amulets, in late Dynasty 12 through Dynasty 13 (ca. 1850-1640 B.C.). Thousands of these late Middle Kingdom scarabs bear the names and titles of officials, who would wear them as amulets, but who could also use them to seal documents, containers or doors. However, the scarabs primary function remained that of a protective amulet. Several inscriptions add a funerary epithet to the owners name, indicating that the amulet was manufactured after the owner had passed away.
