Illuminator: (attributed to) Muhammad Hadi (d. ca. 1771). Date: dated A.H. 1132/A.D. 1719-20.This prayer book reflects the fusion of Indian and Iranian manuscript illumination in the eighteenth century. It contains the Surat al-Yasin and the Surat al-Fath (Victory) copied by the celebrated master of revival naskh, Ahmad Nairizi, with illuminations attributed to the renowned Muhammad Hadi. The color palette and decoration of naturalistic grape-bearing vines and vegetal scrolls in vibrant gold, pistachio green, and crimson resemble designs used in Mughal and Kashmiri manuscript illumination, architectural decoration, and decorative arts. Notebook of Calligraphy dated Muharram A.H. 1170/ A.D. October 1756 This oblong manuscript bound on the short side is referred to as a safina (the Arabic and Persian word for ship). It is an anthology of love poetry in shikasta (broken) script in which the verses are set into cloud-shaped cartouches and set against a background of shimmering gold. Poetic anthologies in this format demonstrate the continuation of a literary tradition that originated in Iran and Central Asia in the 15th century and proliferated from the 16th century onward.. Bookbinding 14th century A twelve-point star serves as the central motif from which the geometric design of this cover emerges. The leather stain varies between two shades of brown to distinguish the shapes, further highlighted by the use of gold-tooled lines. Blind tooling is also employed to give texture to the leather surface interspersed with gold points. The interior flaps are covered with a lighter brown leather with an arabesque pattern. Two other similar bookbindings (33.14 & 33.103.3) in the collection exhibit the same stylistic characteristics, testifying to the popularity of such elaborate covers for manuscripts. Further, the use of complex geometric ornament as a decorative device in Egypt and Syria during the thirteenth- and fourteenth-centuries was prevalent in an expansive variety of objects, from large wooden furnishings to small portable objects such as this bookbinding..
