The jades debt to its bronze prototype is also confirmed by the band of carved abstract motifs around its neck. On a bronze vessel, these abstractions would have represented dragons alternating with fiery whorl designs.FOREIGN OLD(Storage Jar), 5th century, Unknown Korean, 21 7/8 x 18 3/4 in. (55.56 x 47.63 cm), Stoneware with natural ash deposits, Korea, 5th century, The small, independent kingdom of Kaya on Korea's southern coast enjoyed a rich material culture before it was absorbed by Silla, its powerful neighbor to the east, in 562. Bulbous jars with smooth, unadorned surfaces were created in great numbers by Kaya potters, who may also have influenced the production of a similar ware in Japan's Yayoi period (300 b.c. - a.d. 300). This astoundingly large example also has a small amount of natural ash glaze on its shoulder.Glass jug with trefoil rim. Culture: Roman, Syrian. Dimensions: H. 6 1/2 in. (16.5 cm). It is inscribed with Hatshepsut's personal name and her titles as queen:"God's Wife, King's Great Wife whom he loves, Mistress of the Two Lands, Hatshepsut, may she live!"The designation "King's Great Wife whom he loves" suggests this vessel was made before the death of Hatshepsut's husband, Thutmose II.The jar may originally have been intended to furnish Hatshepsut's queen's cliff tomb in western Thebes. After she became king, Hatshepsut seems to have donated goods inscribed with her queen's titles as provisions for the burials of individuals she deemed important (see linen and vessels from the tomb of Hatnefer and Ramose, 36.6.1-36.6.70). Glass bottle with dolphin handles 245416Ewer 9th century This ceramic ewer was excavated at the site of Tepe Madrasa in Nishapur.Nishapur was a vital city in the early and middle Islamic periods, located along one of the main trajectories that connected Iran and West Asia Islamic lands with Central Asia and China. These itineraries are often referred by the term Silk routes but were in fact crucial to the movement of constellations of materials and objects, as well as people and ideas. The diverse population of Nishapur and its surroundings, from the better-researched elite groups of merchants, land-owning aristocracy, and literates, to the less-known artisans, farmers, miners, and servants, were instrumental in adapting global cultural trends to create their own distinctive visual languages. This is seen in the material remains of everyday life in medieval Nishapur - from pots and pans to lighting devices, inkwells, textiles and trimmings, jewelry, games and toys, talismanic devices, weapons, coins, and architectural fragmeBottle 13th-14th century. New Kingdom Although the form changed slightly from one period to the next, ointment jars that flare out from base to rim had been used by the Egyptians since the Pyramid Age, more than 1000 years before this jar was made. Made of serpentine, it probably held a substance that could be used to moisturize the skin. The jar was excavated by the Museum's Egyptian Expedition in 1916. It had been placed near the head of a coffin along with a number of other objects that came to the Museum when the finds were divided with the Egyptian Antiquities Service. These include three jars of Egyptian alabaster (16.10.421, 16.10.423-.424), two pottery vessels (16.10.427-.428), and a small ivory cosmetic box (16.10.425), and three ivory combs (16.10.428-.430)..
