Desk (bonheur du jour) ca. 1780-85 Attributed to Roger Vandercruse, called Lacroix French Small elegant pieces like this ladies writing desk with superstructure became fashionable in France during the 1760s. Known as a bonheur du jour, this type of furniture which combines the functions of a bureau and a secrétaire illustrates the popularity of letter writing in the ancien Régime. Most likely invented by the Paris marchands merciers or luxury dealers who acted as designers and interior decorators, the bonheur du jour remained in fashion until the end of the eighteenth century. Although this writing desk is not stamped, it has been attributed to Roger Van der Cruse, also called Lacroix, based on similar pieces signed by this originally Flemish cabinetmaker. Most of the surface displays marquetry of floral sprigs, while the open shelves on either end for the display of precious objects such as snuffboxes or porcelain, are embellished with a striped pattern. Moreover, it is unique among Rhode Island slab tables for its partially recessed marble top; with a depth of only 16 inches, it is also the shallowest. The attribution to John Goddard is based on its claw feet and carved knees, which are similar in design to those of a tea table he made for Jabez Bowen in 1763 and those of a drop-leaf table he made for James Atkinson.. This table, made when the craftsman was just twenty-four years old, is the earliest instance of such documentation. (It is signed and dated in pencil, in a bold and calligraphic hand, on the underside of thetop.) It is also the earliest datable example of the clawand-ball foot in Newport furniture.. Its exposed framework, simple floating panels, minimal hardware, inward taper, and pronounced verticality create an impression of serene calm and balance. The legs on this example, among the highest known, contribute a sense of lightness to a rather large volumetric form. This room was the center of an upper-class woman's existence, as she was encouraged to live mostly indoors and to avoid lingering at open windows or in the semipublic courtyard of the family house.1 In this chamber she would proudly display the cradle she had been given on her marriage and also wedding chests, or cassone, containing her trousseau.2The finest fifteenth-century cassoni were decorated with panel paintings or with intarsia inlay (see acc. nos. 45.39 and 14.39) or, like the example discussed here, with scenes in pastiglia, a variety of gesso relief applied in layers and painted or gilded. Later, in the sixteenth century, many were embellished with relief carving, usually in walnut (see acc. no. 54.161). Hunts and jousts were sometimes shown on these chests, but theGame table; End of the 18th century (1790-00-00-1800-00-00);gamesSecretary Cabinet. While the subjects are not unusual, the inscriptions are particularly complex, drawing on the writings of Saint Bernard of Clairvaux and other theologians. By tradition, it is said that this piece belonged to Queen Christina of Spain in the nineteenth century. It may reflect her Habsburg ancestors taste for miniature boxwood carvings from the Netherlands, a territory they ruled at the beginning of the sixteenth century.. This wardrobe epitomizes their Anglo-Japanesque style of the 1870s, incorporating many of the design principles that the British critic Charles Locke Eastlake (1793-1865) promoted in the most widely read primer of the Aesthetic movement, his "Hints on Household Taste" (1868), published in America in 1872. The wardrobe is spare, rectilinear, and, as Eastlake espoused, has no "extravagant contour or unnecessary curves." Despite its apparent simplicity, however, the wardrobe is a highly sophisticated object. It references Ming-dynasty cupboards of the seventeenth century that are nearly identical in form, and the marquetry decoration is one of the most remarkable examples in the Herter oeuvre..
