Button ca. 9th-7th century B.C. Iran This small circular object with a central hole and two incised concentric rings on its upper face was excavated at the site of Tepe Nush-i Jan. Located in northwestern Iran, the site is built on a natural outcrop and dominates the surrounding plain. Three periods of occupation were identified: a Median level of about 750 - 650 B.C., which was the best preserved; a level of poor squatter structures; and, after a break, a Parthian-period level dated to the first century B.C. Four major Median mud brick buildings the Central Temple, the Old Western Building, the Columned Hall, and the Fort Building were in use for more than a century. Tepe Nush-i Jan was excavated by David Stronach on behalf of the British Institute of Persian Studies for five seasons between 1967 and 1977. The Metropolitan Museum provided support for all but the final season.. Button 325975Poincon.Fragment ca. 1150-ca. 1250 European or Middle Eastern. Maker: Joseph Dodge, American, 1776-1849Signet Matrix. - Seal, 1770. Possibly made in Birmingham. Presented by Francis Buckley, 1934.. A 'signet' or 'seal matrix' is a small stamp used for impressing the mark of its owner in wax onto documents. This is one of a collection of twenty-seven acquired by the museum in 1934. The majority of examples are finely made of moulded translucent glass, in this case purple. Amusingly, the design is of a signet. The inscription, 'PUSH', refers to the action of impressing the signet into the surface of the wax! .String of beads ca. 3650-3300 B.C. Predynastic, Naqada II. String of beads. ca. 3650-3300 B.C.. Fragment 694188Button or Bead 9th-10th century This object was excavated at Nishapur.Nishapur was a vital city in the early and middle Islamic periods, located along one of the main trajectories that connected Iran and West Asia Islamic lands with Central Asia and China. These itineraries are often referred to by the term Silk routes’ but were in fact crucial to the movement of constellations of materials and objects, as well as people and ideas. The diverse population of Nishapur and its surroundings, from the better-researched elite groups of merchants, land-owning aristocracy, and literates, to the less-known artisans, farmers, miners, and servants, were instrumental in adapting global cultural trends to create their own distinctive visual languages. This is seen in the material remains of everyday life in medieval Nishapur - from pots and pans to lighting devices, inkwells, textiles and trimmings, jewelry, games and toys, talismanic devices, weapons, coins, and architectural fragments.Nishapur lSize of 1/8 oil size with handle. The back was left rough, and the amulets may look ragged because glass overflowed the mold around the edges. The earlier amulets are monochrome, bi- or multicolor amulets supplement the repertoire during the Ptolemaic Period. Some of the amulets can be specifically tied to spells of the Book of the Dead - for example, acc. no. 17.194.2526 - and most are clearly funerary amulets, presumably meant to be wrapped between the bandages of the mummy where the presence of the amulet would do its job irrespective of its degree of finish.. In ancient Rome, there was a high demand for colorful glass that could dazzle banquet guests alongside the expensive silver and gold serving wares meant to impress. Fragments like this one would have once been a part of larger mosaic dishes. The mosaic pattern was made by sagging molten glass into bowl-shaped molds, a technique used on many of these fragments is similar to millefiori, ìthousand flowersî in Italian, a modern glass-making method in which tiny rods of colored glass are bundled together, wrapped in a sheet of glass, fused, and then thinly sliced to reveal swirls of a flower-like patterns. They were arranged side by side, sometimes together with bits of colored glass, and fused together with heat.. Glass, mosaic glass technique . Ancient RomanReflected Glass of Red Wine
