Interior Elevation of Reims Cathedral with a Statue of King Louis I 1815 Charles Percier French This sheet shows an elevation of part of the interior of Reims Cathedral with a statue of King Louis I. This design represents one of six drawings that form the only documentation of the plans for the coronation of King Louis XVIII, which never took place. The event was likely delayed, and eventually dismissed due to the precarious state of the French monarchy and the declining health of the King. In addition, the idea of a Royal coronation, bestowed by the French Catholic Church had become a point of contention after the fall of the first monarchy and the Emperor Napoleons decision to crown himself. For these reasons, King Louis XVIIIs successor, Charles X, opted not to have a coronation in Reims when he ascended the throne in 1824. Some of the concerns for how the coronation would be perceived can be noted in the decoration scheme that was devised by Percier and Fontaine. The architect d

The Last Supper 1548 Fra Damiano da Bergamo (Damiano di Antoniolo de Zambelli) Commissioned by Claude d'Urfé, Ambassador of the King of France to the Council of Trent. Executed by Fra Damiano da Bergamo and his assistants in the Convent of San Domenico at Bologna, and set up in the Chapel of the Chteau de la Bastie d'Urfé, near Lyons.The altarpiece, representing the Last Supper, is signed by Fra Damiano and dated 1548. It was designed by Jacopo Barozzi da Vignola.The inlaid panels show architectural views, still lifes, landscapes, sacred subjects and ornamental patterns.The carved cartouches display the cipher of Claude d'Urfé and his wife, Jeanne de Balzac, the Eucharistic sacrificial lamb, adopted as an emblem by Claude d'Urfé, and various Trinitarian symbols. French artist Theodore Roussel took up etching while living in London during the late 1880s, developing his own techniques and distinctive style. Here, Roussel used aquatint to show a nude woman dimly lit by a fire. To accurately represent the evocative lighting described in the works title, Roussel mixed pigments to produce his own inks and carefully applied them to the plate with stencils. He also developed a method of registration so that the mat and frame—both his own printed designs—aligned precisely with the image.
