The main portal, of the 14th century, contains a semicircular tympanum within which is a fresco of the Madonna and Child with S. Augustine and S. Nicholas of Bari, a work of the Sienese school from 1354. Above the lunette in the gable is a relief of the Lamb of God. The other medieval portal on one of the transept arms is less elaborate than the main portal, consisting of double-arcaded windows and a central round window above. Fragment of Frieze with Acanthus Leaves Encircling Fruit and Flowers 6th century In the 500s Apa (Father) Jeremias founded a Coptic monastery at Saqqara, the ancient Egyptian necropolis (cemetery) of the city of Memphis, near the oldest pyramids. He and the earliest monks lived in tombs at the site. As the monastery grew, several grand churches with lavish decoration were built, as well as many chapels, public buildings, and complexes of cells (rooms) for each monk. The monastery continued to grow after the Arab conquest with materials from early Byzantine tomb structures being reused for additional monastic structures. Inscriptions record prayers to numerous holy figures. Sculptural elements from Saqqara are often carved with deeply undercut patterns to intensify the play of light and shadow and to mask the solidity of the architecture. Date: 11th century.This panel is believed to have formed a large frieze along the entrance to a prayer hall that served a densely populated residential neighborhood. The frieze was originally painted in red and blue and included the word al-sultan, a title that first occurred in monumental epigraphy in the eleventh century with Seljuq and Ghaznavid rulers. Speculum Romanae Magnificentiae: Della Valle Frieze 1561 Anonymous This print comes from the museums copy of the Speculum Romanae Magnificentiae (The Mirror of Roman Magnificence) The Speculum found its origin in the publishing endeavors of Antonio Salamanca and Antonio Lafreri. During their Roman publishing careers, the two foreign publishers - who worked together between 1553 and 1563 - initiated the production of prints recording art works, architecture and city views related to Antique and Modern Rome. The prints could be bought individually by tourists and collectors, but were also purchased in larger groups which were often bound together in an album. In 1573, Lafreri commissioned a title page for this purpose, which is where the title ‘Speculum Romanae Magnificentiae first appears. Lafreri envisioned an ideal arrangement of the prints in 7 different categories, but during his lifetime, never appears to have offered one standard, bound set of prints. Instead, clients composed t
