Wine cooler with Charles Vs Victory at Mühlberg ca. 1560-90 Based on an engraving by Enea Vico The painted scene on the interior of this cooler depicts an important sixteenth-century event—the 1547 victory of the Catholic forces of the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V over his Protestant enemies. A Latin inscription identifies the scene, which was adapted from a popular print. Coolers were not originally intended to be hung on a wall, but this works foot was removed in later centuries when collectors preferred the vertical display of pottery.. Barberini Cabinet. Artist and publisher: After woodcut illustrations by Francesco Del Tuppo (Italian, 1443/44-1501) , published in Naples in 1485. Culture: Italian, Florence. Dimensions: 23 1/4 x 38 1/8 x 14 1/8 in. (59.1 x 96.8 x 35.9 cm). Maker: Galleria dei Lavori, Florence. Date: ca. 1606-23."The Barberini family in the later sixteenth and seventeenth centuries presents a virtual paradigm of the well-managed Roman family. The Barberini recognized that the way to power and wealth lay through the Church and that the perpetuation of the family was dependent on marriage; and they accordingly consistently pursued both of those channels of family development. For several generations they were blessed with sufficient male offspring, and they managed this natural resource to the benefit of the family as a whole."1 In line with this tradition, Maffeo (1568-1644), the second youngest of Antonio Barberini's six sons, left Florence in 1584, to take up residence and continue his education at

Wall Fountain and Basin Made 1750-1760 Sceaux. This fountain, sculpted in high relief and painted in bright enamel colors, exemplifies both the ambitions of the pottery established at Sceaux, south of Paris, and the exuberance of the Rococo style of mid-18th-century France. A triton (a mythological sea deity resembling a merman), a nymph, and a scampering child pose on a rocky, shell-encrusted outcrop that projects over a dolphin-like sea creature from whose open mouth water flowed. Underneath, a large shell-shaped basin enriched with reeds and bulrushes, supported by rockwork and another sea monster, receives the water that streamed from above. The shell and reed decoration, characteristic of the Rococo, here also reinforces the aquatic theme of the piece.A pottery had existed at Sceaux from around 1739, but it only truly prospered after the arrival of Jacques Chapelle as director in 1749. Chapelle seems to have had ambitions to produce porcelain at Sceaux but was prohibited by the st

Portrait of Luigi Sommariva citrine 1820, gold suspension loop probably contemporary with intaglio Giovanni Beltrami The pale yellow, oval citrine is cut as a cabochon (curved at the front and flat at the back) and highly polished. Into the back Giovanni Beltrami engraved a miniature version of Robert Lefèvres oil portrait of Luigi Sommariva (Galleria dArte Moderna, Milan). The image and its accompanying inscription are carved in reverse so that they are oriented correctly when the citrine is viewed from the front. The translucent stones convex shape acts like a lens to enlarge the scene and to amplify the sense of form and spatial recession. The deeply carved figure of Luigi has the startling three-dimensionality of a hologram while the shallowly carved landscape appears to expand into the far distance behind him. Beltrami convincingly rendered different materials and textures by varying the grinding strokes in the predominantly matte engraving. He highly polished discrete areas to

Terracotta squat lekythos (oil jar) mid-4th century B.C. Greek, Attic Events in the Athenian festival of the AdoniaThe Adonia was a festival held in summer and dedicated to Adonis, the beautiful young hunter beloved by Aphrodite and killed by a boar. From his spilled blood, flowers issued from the ground. The celebration of the Adonia included setting pots of plants on rooftops to germinate and quickly wither. The lekythos shows a woman on a ladder receiving a planter from Eros, presumably to place on a roof. Similar objects appear in the field. Seated below the ladder is a young man, perhaps Adonis, and behind Eros is a woman, perhaps Aphrodite. The procession of figures behind the goddess may be connected with the ritual..
