(5.72 x 5.08 x 5.4 cm), Gold, India, 19th-20th century, The unique shape of these earrings represents an abstracted image of a cobra laying eggs on her nest. Amid the complex arrangement of geometric forms, one can discern two bulging eyes on a widespread hood. Especially in rural regions of Southern India, where these earrings were commonly worn, snakes are simultaneously revered and feared. While they signal protection, their close association with water and the earth also makes them emblems of fortune and fertility.Paper Weight in the Shape of a CrouchingDogPeru, Pre-Inca civilization, Chimu culture, goldsmith art, gold crownWreath consisting of laurel and oak branches ca. 1760-70 French. India This exquisite pair of gold earrings in rare in having survived. While splendid jewelry adorns the regal and divine figures represented on early stone sculptures and terracotta plaques, few actual ornaments still exist. It is thought that jewelry was not kept and reused but instead was melted down possibly to avoid transmitting the karma of the former owner. In addition to clusters and rows of beads, each earring is decorated with a winged lion, and elephant and two vases filled with vegetation. Put on by slipping through a distended earlobe from the back, they are worn with the lion facing the wearer's cheek and the elephant on the outside. The place of these earrings in the history of Indian art is assured, not only for their intrinsic beauty, but also because of the light they shed on the superb quality of early gold-smithing in this region. Two semi-spherical eyes protrude from the head, and the turtles mouth has been indicated with a chiseled line wrapping around the front of the snout. The shell is shown as characteristically dome-like and has a distinct border, a circumferential band of metal in relief around the upper half. The overall form has a symmetrical, spherical appearance and bears some resemblance to the turtle-shaped bells found in the Sacred Cenote at Chichén Itzá in Yucatán (e.g., PMAE 10-71-20/C7711A or 10-73-20/C7739), likely imported from the Central American Isthmus. The bell was cast through the lost-wax process. As the model of the bell was being created, a thread of wax may have been added down the middle of the shells top; a slight ridge is evident in this area especially closer to the turtles head. Culture: French. Date: late 17th century.A new level of card game mania swept Europe during the 17th century. Gambling with cards or "gaming" was a favored pastime for both men and women of all ages and classes. Several examples of luxury gaming purses in the Brooklyn Museum collection reflect the fashion for a specific type of bag in which to hold one's coins or counters won in games like "Put" or "La Bête." Made of velvet or brocade, the bags are often heavily embroidered with silver and gold metallic threads. Like others of the type, it has a round flat bottom and closes by means of a drawstring at the top edge. Wooden beads covered with metallic thread form the fancy end ornaments on the drawstring. A pouch bag like this allowed even the unlucky to appear fashionable at the gaming table. Date: 1860-65.Carriage parasols were popularized by Queen Victoria in the 1840s and continued to be popular through the nineteenth century. They were distinguished for their size and carried as decorative accessories which served some function of shading the face from the sun, as close-fitting fashionable hats at that time did not. The claw and ball motif found on the handle was also a popular motif in furniture legs of the Queen Anne and Chippendale styles. It is a representation of a bird's claw grasping a ball and is thought to be derived from the Chinese dragon's claw holding a crystal ball or jewel.
