According to Greek legend, Hero was a priestess of Aphrodite, the goddess of love. Her lover, Leander, swam the Hellespont every night to visit her in Sestos. One night, he drowned. She then threw herself into the sea. Nineteenth-century British painter Lord Leighton painted his interpretation of Hero looking for Leander on the night he drowned. It is now housed in England's Manchester Art Gallery.
