He came from Venice's leading family of painters, and at least in the early part of his career was more highly regarded than his younger brother Giovanni Bellini, the reverse of the case today. Now housed at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston, this painting reflects Bellinis passion for Eastern cultures. Originally commissioned by Fatih Sultan Mehmet II in 1479 to go to Constantinople to paint portraits of the sultan for two years, the Venetian painter was strongly influenced by Ottoman traditions and fashions.Cinderella. Peacock later married the elder sister. The younger sister is Ethel. The great charm of this painting lies in the color scheme. The gray shades of the dresses contrast agreeably with the mahogany brown of the background, both of which serve to dispaly the complexions of the girls and the golden and rich brown hues of their hair. Late in his career, William Merritt Chase took to painting dramatic still lifes of fish, often staging the process as a demonstration or performance for studentsin this case for his American students while in Bruges, Belgium, and for the Brooklyn Museum’s then-director William H. Fox, who recorded the artist’s bravura method for posterity. Drawing on his Munich training (in the 1870s), and its emphasis on the high tonal contrast and vigorous brushwork exemplified by Dutch and Spanish Baroque art, Chase painted quickly, “wet into wet” (brushing wet paint into wet paint), beginning with a base preparation of silvery white and blue tones. Identifying the brightest passage at the outset, Chase then worked up the darks and lights simultaneously. Here that bright area is the upturned belly of the skate, or ray, described with layer after layer of milky,The Seamstress. Theodore Robinson (1852-1896). Oil on canvas. The canvas and its companion, "Autumn," were exhibited at the Apollo Association in January 1839. A fashionable artist, Thompson capitalized on the vogue for allegorical and romantic portraiture, constructing sentimentalized visions of young women. Here, the figure is adorned in the latest style of the season and placed in a lush garden complete with the requisite Neoclassical marble urn. Her arresting gaze and informal posture are complemented by Thompsons light-infused handling of paint..
