Jabesh-Gileadites Recover the Bodies of Saul and His Sons, Illustration from the Dore Bible 1866. In 1866, the French artist and illustrator Gustave Dore (18321883), published a series of 241 wood engravings for a new deluxe edition of the 1843 French translation of the Vulgate Bible, popularly known as the Bible de Tours. This new edition was known as La Grande Bible de Tours and its illustrations were immensely successful.

He is transformed before the eyes of his companions in the course of his prayers; his robes emit a blinding white light. Moreover, the Old Testament prophets Elijah and Moses suddenly appear to converse with him. In Tissots rendering, one apostle shields his eyes from the brilliant glow, while another covers his ears as Gods supernatural voice declares Jesus his beloved Son. European Art 1886-1896

This painting by Frederic Leighton shows Helen of Troy attended by her handmaidens. In Greek legend, Paris was a Trojan prince, the son of Priam and Hecuba. When Eris, the Greek goddess of discord, was not invited to the marriage of the Greek leader Achilles, she threw a golden apple into the festivities, with the words "for the fairest" written on it. The goddesses Hera, Aphrodite, and Athena each claimed the apple, and Zeus, the king of the gods, had Paris choose which one should get it. Following the Last Supper, Jesus and the apostles retreat to Gethsemane (an olive grove) on the Mount of Olives. While his disciples rest, Christ prays alone, asking God if it is possible to let his sufferings pass him by, yet reaffirming his commitment to submit to Gods will. Luke writes that an angel comes to strengthen him, though in his anguish Jesus sweats blood, a graphic detail that, unusually, Tissot omits. While Lukes account says that Christ receives comfort from the angel, Tissots image seems to promise little solace and, indeed, is profoundly different in tone from the earlier watercolor The Angels Came and Ministered to Him. In the most memorable, and even notorious, of Tissots images, Christ looks out at the crowd of spectators arrayed before him: Mary Magdalene, in the immediate foreground, with her long red tresses swirling down her back, kneels at his feet, which are clearly visible at the bottom center of the composition. Beyond her, the Virgin Mary clutches her breast, while John the Evangelist looks up with hands clasped. The artist here adopts the point of view of Christ himself. Few painters have conceived a composition this daring. In his audacity, however, Tissot remains true to his artistic vision: ultimately, the image is an exercise in empathy.
