The Dead Appear in the Temple (Les morts apparaissent dans le Temple) James Tissot (French, 1836-1902). The Dead Appear in the Temple (Les morts apparaissent dans le Temple), 1886-1894. Opaque watercolor over graphite on gray wove paper, Image: 8 7/16 x 11 3/16 in. (21.4 x 28.4 cm). While the scenes of the Crucifixion examine the precise mechanics of the execution, lending a credible veracity to the ancient events, this image takes a more mystical or fantastical approach. Immediately after the death of Jesus, Matthew writes, tombs broke open and the bodies of many holy persons who had died came back to life, went into the city, and showed themselves to the people. Tissot paints the risen dead as spectral forms, flying through Jerusalem and the Temple precinct, scattering the living, who fear that contact with the dead will defile them. In the Temple, resurrected priests, garbed in the costume of their rank, fly through the court, rising like the smoke from the altar of burnt sacrifice

The Baptism of Jesus (Baptême de Jésus) James Tissot (French, 1836-1902). The Baptism of Jesus (Baptême de Jésus), 1886-1894. Opaque watercolor over graphite on gray wove paper, Image: 8 1/2 x 5 1/2 in. (21.6 x 14 cm). According to Matthew, Jesus travels from Galilee to Judaea to be baptized by John the Baptist in the Jordan River. Although John humbly protests and suggests that it is he who should be baptized by Jesus instead, Jesus insists. Here, a dove descends from the heavens as Jesus emerges from the water, while a voice from above calls him my beloved Son.” Perhaps in reference to earlier passages in the Gospels relating the curiosity and suspicion John’s desert ministry inspired in some quarters, several witnesses surreptitiously watch the proceedings through a screen of rushes on the riverbank. Tissot’s text states that John the Baptist and Jesus, cousins often presented as childhood companions in artistic tradition, met again as adults at a place marked with twelve stones,

The Birth of Our Lord Jesus Christ (La nativité de Notre-Seigneur Jésus-Christ) James Tissot (French, 1836-1902). The Birth of Our Lord Jesus Christ (La nativité de Notre-Seigneur Jésus-Christ), 1886-1894. Opaque watercolor over graphite on gray wove paper, Image: 5 5/8 x 6 3/4 in. (14.3 x 17.1 cm). Paying his usual rigorous attention to researching the settings for his interpretation of the narrative, Tissot places the episode of Jesus birth in one of the caves in the mountains in and around Bethlehem, a departure from visual tradition, which often locates the Nativity in a stable. Unable to find rooms in the town, Mary and Joseph take shelter here. In his commentary, Tissot explains the presence of animals who gaze upon the newborn Jesus by noting that shepherds often used these caves on cold evenings. Although Tissot spurned the art-historical convention of the halo in his depictions of the Holy Family and the apostles, he endows the infant Christ with a glow that illuminates the

The Three Crosses. When you scratch a line in an etching plate, it produces a small raised edge called a burr’. The burr, which gives drypoint lines such a sumptuous velvety look, wears away quickly. As a result, the decorative effect of the technique diminishes and the representation becomes increasingly lighter. Here Rembrandt solved that problem by making areas of shadow darker again with extra lines, for example under the dog in the foreground.

Jesus Stilling the Tempest (Jésus calmant la tempête) James Tissot (French, 1836-1902). Jesus Stilling the Tempest (Jésus calmant la tempête), 1886-1894. Opaque watercolor over graphite on gray wove paper, Image: 5 x 7 1/4 in. (12.7 x 18.4 cm). While crossing the Sea of Galilee in a ship during the night, Jesus and his disciples are overtaken by a storm. Tissot omits any sign of landfall, heightening the sense of danger in the rough, stormy sea. Awakened by his followers, who fear for their lives, Jesus quiets the tempest with a dramatic and dynamic gesture and rebukes his companions for their lack of faith. Tissots commentary connects this shipboard miracle with the miraculous draught of fishes, noting: “It was in the same boat, which then symbolized the Church, that Our Lord stilled the tempest and reassured the disciples, who typified redeemed mankind.” European Art 1886-1894

The Holy Virgin Kisses the Face of Jesus Before He is Enshrouded on the Anointing Stone (La Sainte Vierge baise la face de Jésus avant qu'il ne soit enveloppé par les suaires sur la pierre de l'onction) James Tissot (French, 1836-1902). The Holy Virgin Kisses the Face of Jesus Before He is Enshrouded on the Anointing Stone (La Sainte Vierge baise la face de Jésus avant qu'il ne soit enveloppé par les suaires sur la pierre de l'onction), 1886-1894. Opaque watercolor over graphite on gray wove paper, Image: 9 13/16 x 14 7/8 in. (24.9 x 37.8 cm). In his text, Tissot describes the slow, careful manner with which the Virgin, attended by other holy women, washed and dried her sons wounds before the procession accompanied the body to the stone of anointing. In this image, the body has been wrapped, according to Jewish custom, with linen bands before being placed in a series of shrouds, the last hiding the face. Before covering his visage, the Virgin gives her son a final kiss. Unlike the im
