Henri IV, Marie de Médicis and the Dauphin. Artist: Guillaume Dupré (French, 1579-1640). Culture: French, Paris. Dimensions: Diameter: 7 1/2 in. (19.1 cm). Date: 1605.The composition represents a rethinking and clarification of a smaller medal that Dupré produced in 1603 to celebrate Henri IV's heir. The dauphin, the future Louis XIII, stands between his parents, who are garbed as Mars and Minerva. With one foot planted on the head of a dolphin, his usual attribute, the dauphin bears his father's helmet. Henri IV was already greatly taken with the earlier medal and issued letters patent authorizing Dupré to make as many examples in as many materials as he wished. Dupré obviously understood his rights to include the design's overhaul and enlargement. This uniface example of the enlarged 1605 reverse as well as a uniface specimen of the obverse were auctioned in 1988. This piece commemorates the 1478 attack in Florence Cathedral on the Medici, first citizens but not rulers of the city. To make it acceptable, it flouts the rules of medals by combining portrait and narrative on both sides. This side, labeled Public grief’, shows the head and, below, the murder of Giuliano de’ Medici, Lorenzo’s younger brother.Reverse: Modeled and cast in 1478, immediately after Lorenzo de’ Medici survived a murderous attack in Florence Cathedral, this medal renders the events of the day timeless and heroic by giving them a classicizing character. Though both Lorenzo’s features and, below, the choir of the Cathedral are clearly recognizable, the sitter is given classical draperies while the protagonists are depicted nude.. Roundel with Scenes of the Attack on the Castle of Love ca. 1320-40 French The attack on the Castle of Love became a popular image in the fourteenth century and is represented here with particular delicacy. Twenty- eight figures and five horses occupy the ground in front of the castle, as well as its battlements and windows. At the top the crowned and winged god of love prepares to launch an arrow toward the lower left. The castle is defended by women armed with roses that they hurl at the attacking knights. The knights are greeted by some women with welcoming gestures; and, in the upper left, a woman offers a crown to one of the trumpeters, who will announce the playful joust to take place before the portcullis. The shield depicts the surrender of Prince-Electory Johann Friedrich of Saxony (1503-1554) to Emperor Charles V (reigned 1519-56) after the battle of Mühlberg on April 24, 1547. This battle marked the defeat of Protestant German princes at the hands of the Catholic League, led by the emperor.The scene derives from an engraving by Maerten van Heemskerck (1498-1574) that is part of a series depicting the triumphs of Charles V, published in Antwerp in 1556.. Gian Galeazzo Manzi on or after 1669 Italian Although all but forgotten today, Gian Galeazzo Manzi, a professor of philosophy and medicine at the University of Bologna and a public anatomist, was famous during his lifetime for his scientific accomplishments. In 1671 during the canonization process of Catherine of Bologna (1413-1463), Manzi was among the panel of physicians who examined her body in order to establish its miraculous incorruptibility. The unknown sculptor of this medal portrays Manzi in his old age, bewigged and clothed in academic robes.
