Hermione invoking Minerva early 19th century Italian The intaglio is a fake, one of six in the Museum's collection, similar in style to those supplied by Italian Neoclassical engravers to Prince Stanislaw Poniatowski of Poland. Carried out in a figural style indebted to that of Antonio Canova, the Poniatowski gems bear the names of the carvers most celebrated in ancient Greece, such as Gnaios. Saint John the Evangelist ca. 1550 Attributed to Jean III Pénicaud French This set of four roundels (2013.967.1-.4) depicts the Evangelists, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, each identified by inscriptions and accompanied by their respective symbols: the angel, the lion, the ox and the eagle. Two different artists are detectable: Mark and Luke stand out as the work of an exceptionally talented practitioner, including some breathtakingly lovely touches in the application of the flesh tones, rendered in a thin red wash on top of the translucent whites, the curls of the saints' hair, and details like the showering gold at the base of Luke's halo.. Date: ca. 1445.This is a uniface cast of the reverse of a medal of Nero, the obverse of which shows his bust to the right. It is the work of an unidentified medallist, active in the 15th century, who specialized in pastiches of ancient Roman coins enlarged in scale. Balash (in the Greek authors, Balas; the later form of the name Vologases), the eighteenth Sassanid King of Persia (484-488), was the brother and successor of Peroz I of Persia (457-484). Balash was made King of Persia following the death of his brother Peroz who had died in a battle against the Hephthalites (White Huns) who invaded Persia from the east. Immediately after ascending the throne, he sought peace with the Hephthalites which cost the Persians a heavy tribute.
