Date: ca. 1620-35.The rampant lion, an animal with strong heraldic connotations, must have been a successful model for several types of automata, to judge from the number of surviving examples. The eyes and mouth of this automaton are set in motion when the clock strikes the hour. The piece was in use long enough to have been fitted with a short pendulum sometime after its invention in the second half of the seventeenth century. The "feathered" decoration of this kohl tube was achieved by winding thin colored glass rods around the vessel and pressing them onto the surface of the vessel while it was still soft, and then drawing the rods up or down with a metal instrument.. This saihai is decorated with peony blossoms, the mon (crest) of the Tsugaru family. The Tsugaru, who had land in northern Japan, were wealthy and influential daimyo (lords) who were renowned as patrons of the arts. The Tsugaru continue to be one of the leading families in Japan; they were united in the eighteenth century with the imperial household through the marriage of Tsugaru Hanako and Prince Hitachi, the younger brother of the Emperor.
