In her study of interior decoration sources from the 18th century, Narcissa Thorne learned of the taste among Americans and Europeans for imported Chinese wallpaper. The walls in this space are covered with a hand-painted pattern of birds, trees, and flowers produced in the same manner as the full-scale wallpapers from China 150 years earlier.. E-12 English Drawing Room of the Georgian Period, c 1800 Made 1932-1937 United States. The sixty-eight Thorne Miniature Rooms enable viewers to glimpse elements of European interiors from the late 13th century to the 1930s and American interiors from the 17th century to the 1930s. Painstakingly constructed on a scale of one inch to one foot, these fascinating models were conceived by Mrs. James Ward Thorne of Chicago and constructed between 1937 and 1940 by master craftsmen according to her specifications. The English Drawing Room of the Georgian Period, c. 1800, reproduced here in detail, was intended to illustrate the late-18th-century Neoclassical style of designer Thomas Sheraton, distinguished by elegant, light shapes and colors. Boiserie from the Hôtel Lauzun ca. 1770, with one modern panel French, Paris The oak paneling in this room was acquired in the late nineteenth century by Baron Frédéric-Jérôme Pichon (1812-1896). The baron, a well-known Parisian bibliophile and collector, incorporated the paneling, stripped of its original paint, into the large library that he installed on the first floor of his Paris residence, the Hôtel Lauzun, at 17, quai d'Anjou, on the Ile Saint-Louis. The paneling, which dates from the early Louis XVI period, about 1770, was not in keeping with the seventeenth-century décor of the Hôtel Lauzun and was dismantled and sold by the baron's grandson about 1906.The carving of the principal panels consists of various floral motifs and stylized ornaments that introduce a lively informal rhythm into the decoration of the room. Architectural woodwork and paneling 1881-82 George A. Schastey & Co. In 1881, Arabella Worsham, then-mistress of railroad magnate Collis P. Huntington, hired George A. Schastey & Co. to decorate her townhouse at 4 West Fifty-Fourth Street in New York City. The resulting artistic interiors would have been considered the height of cosmopolitan style in the early 1880s and were emblematic of Worshams quest to fashion her identity as a wealthy, prominent woman of taste. When Worsham married Huntington in 1884, she sold the house, fully furnished, to John D. and Laura Spelman Rockefeller, who made few subsequent changes to the decorations. Following Mr. Rockefellers death in 1937, the house was demolished, yet some furnishings, large-scale architectural elements, and three interiors were preserved, and the rooms were donated to local museums by John D.
