Room from a hotel in the Cours d'Albret, Bordeaux ca. 1785, with later additions Carving attributed to Barthélemy Cabirol Bordeaux, an important seaport on the Garonne River in southwest France, experienced unprecedented economic and demographic growth during the second half of the eighteenth century. At that time the medieval city was beautified and modernized with new houses and streets. The British traveler Arthur Young (1741-1820) remarked on this in the late 1780s: Much as I had read and heard of the commerce, wealth, and magnificence of this city, they greatly surpassed my expectations.. The new houses that are building in all quarters of the town, mark, too clearly to be misunderstood,the prosperity of the place.”[1The Museum’s delightful small and intimate room is believed to have come from the Hôtel de Saint-Marc on the cours d’Albret, one of the recently laid out avenues. Dining room from Lansdowne House 1766-69 After a design by Robert Adam British, Scottish Lansdowne House, designed by Robert Adam and situated at the southwest corner of Berkeley Square, London, was begun for Prime Minister John Stuart, third earl of Bute, who sold it, unfinished, about 1765 to William Petty-Fitzmaurice (1737-1805), earl of Shelburne, later first marquess of Lansdowne and a leading Whig statesman of the period. The house was completed from Adam's designs for Lord Shelburne in 1768 and was a meeting place for Whig social and political circles in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.The central block of the house still stands at the corner of Fitzmaurice Place and Lansdowne Row, and was converted into a club in 1930, when the two wings were demolished. The dining room, or "Eating-room," as Adam labeled it in the engraving for his Works (1773), was in the south wing (to the left of the photograph) and was bought by the Museum in 1931. Parlor from the William Moore House. Culture: American. Dimensions: Dimensions unavailable. Date: ca. 1811.This parlor was taken from a house built in Petersburg, Virginia in 1811 for William Moore, an Irish-born pharmacist, but prominently displays furniture made in New York City. Many pieces once belonged to the noted early-twentieth-century collector Bertha King Benkard and were donated to the Museum after her death. In 1980, the Museum renamed this room in her honor. Like the American Wing's Baltimore and Haverhill Rooms (18.101.1 and 12.121, respectively), the Benkard Room exemplifies the popularity of Robert and James Adam's neoclassical taste in the young United States. Each of the Moore House's two floors had a center hall with a room on either side.
