Not at Home Eastman Johnson (American, 1824-1906). Not at Home, ca. 1873. Oil on laminated paperboard, 26 7/16 x 22 5/16 in. (67.1 x 56.7 cm). The paintings title may seem curious, especially since there is clearly someone in this comfortably furnished domestic interior. In the past, however, the phrase “not at home” indicated that the occupants of the house were not available to receive visitors. This painting held a particularly personal meaning for Eastman Johnson. It shows his wife, Elizabeth, climbing the stairs leading to more private areas of their residence on Manhattans West Fifty-fifth Street. American Art ca. 1873

Woodwork of a Room from the Colden House, Coldenham, New York ca. 1767 American The woodwork in this room came from a large stone house, in Coldenham, New York. The original owner was Cadwallader Colden Jr. According to a date inscribed on one of the stones of the structure, Colden built the structure in 1767. This parlor comes from the front left side of the house. The treatment of its walls exemplifies a well-developed, late eighteenth-century trend of paneling only the fireplace wall of a room and covering the remaining walls with plaster between the dado and cornice.
