Evening. Artist: Frederick Wellington Ruckstull (American, (born France) Breitenbach, 1853-1942 New York). Dimensions: 72 1/2 x 20 x 20 in. (184.2 x 50.8 x 50.8 cm). Date: 1887; carved 1891.Ruckstull intended "Evening" to portray an ideal, rather than a specific being. It illustrates his observation that "everything in nature folds at evening." The voluptuous figure in a contrapposto stance tucks her face under her raised, bent right arm, and her drowsy, distant expression suggests the approach of sleep.
