Eagle from a grave monument. The eagle turns its head towards a partially preserved snake that was raised threateningly and which it catches with its talons. Date: 1883.To preserve and multiply his original compositions, Rodin molded and cast reproductions of them in plaster and, less frequently, terracotta. This work was made from sheets of wet clay that had been pressed into molds and then fired. Although broken and repaired long ago, it is a precious record of Rodin's expansive artistic production. Statue of Nebhepetre Mentuhotep II in the Jubilee Garment ca. 2051-2000 B.C. Middle Kingdom Twenty-two statues of this type stood beside (but not in the shadow of) sycomore and tamarisk trees that lined the processional path through the forecourt of the mortuary temple of Nebhepetre Mentuhotep II at Deir el-Bahri. The rough, rectangular base was inserted into the ground. The king wears the traditional short mantle of the pharaoh's thirty-year jubilee festival (Heb Sed). In his fists were the now missing scepter and flail of Egyptian kings and the god Osiris, probably made of metal. The head on this piece wears the "red" crown of Lower Egypt. Although no head with the "white" crown of Upper Egypt was found, it is conceivable that the statues along the south side of the path wore the "white" Upper Egyptian crown, while the ones along the north side wore the "red" Lower Egyptian one. At some later time all statues from the forecourt were decapitated and broken up. Some bodies were buried

Female Figure 10th century B.C. Tlatilco This solid, hand-modeled ceramic figurine is buff in color with traces of red and white face paint. The breasts are depicted as small pellets and a naval is only slightly indicated. The wide hips, bulbous thighs, and large buttocks terminate in rudimentary appendages, as do the short, splayed arms. Incisions on the back of the head indicate a female coiffure, with a single braid extending down the back. Large earplugs and a thick coil necklace are the figures only adornments. Sculpted some three millennia ago in the Valley of Mexico, this figurine belongs to a group of ceramic effigies known collectively as the Tlatilco "pretty ladies." Depicting females with large heads, small waists, and prominent hips, these handheld sculptures present a fairly standardized body type and are typically fired to red, buff, or brown tones. Furniture leg () with a recumbent lion supporting a deity. Culture: Iran. Dimensions: H. 2 13/16 x W. 1 3/4 x D. 3 7/16 in. (7.2 x 4.5 x 8.7 cm). Date: ca. 9th century B.C..Excavations at Hasanlu in Iran yielded a large number of carved ivory fragments, many in a distinctive style found only at this site, which probably decorated wooden furniture or were used as small precious objects such as boxes. The citadel at Hasanlu was attacked and destroyed around 800 B.C., most likely by military forces of the powerful state of Urartu, centered in present-day Armenia, eastern Turkey, and northwestern Iran. In the fire that destroyed the citadel, many objects were crushed and shattered. The blackened appearance of most of the Hasanlu ivories is due to their exposure to high temperatures at the time of the citadel's destruction.This large sculpted piece of ivory was probably either a furniture leg or a handle to an implement.
