Lamentation Beneath the Cross. Artist: Adam Lenckhart (German, Würzburg 1610-1661 Vienna). Culture: Austrian, carved in Italy. Dimensions: Overall: 10 7/8 × 5 3/4 in. (27.6 × 14.6 cm). Date: 1632.The fine perspectival gradations of relief create a painterly effect of distant background while the foreground is filled with vivid detail-the finely carved crown of thorns, the carefully observed leafy ferns, the bent nails removed from holes clearly indicated on the cross. Lenckhart often employed such detail to great expressive effect; here, the precise carving of the strands of hair curtaining the face of the Magdalen draws our gaze to her grief-stricken form. Relief moulded metal plaque for sewing box Frédéric Charles Victor de Vernon French ca. 1900 In a telling glimpse of French middle-class, fin-de-siècle society, the targeted consumers of this plaquette were women who passed their recreational hours in the accomplished and industrious activity of needlework. The maidens in the design attending to their sewing were meant to evoke reality: the plaquette adorned the lid of a sewing box. Using cutting-edge modern reproductive technology, this plaquette was created as one of multiples, available on order from a printed sales catalogue. It was also available in miniature format as a thimble, with matching scissors and needle cases, all in Vernons elegant and fashionable Art Nouveau style. View more. Marble funerary altar ca. A.D. 14-68 Roman The inscription commemorates a certain Q. Fabius Diogenes and Fabia Primigenia, who lived together for forty-seven years, and tells that the altar was set up by his freedmen, freedwomen, and household slaves. Diogenes himself was probably a freed slave who had acquired a certain wealth and position. This is reflected in the ornamentation of the altar, which is a deliberate echo of imagery used in imperial art of the Julio-Claudian period. The heavy garland suspended from rams heads derives from the kind of decoration found on the walls of public sanctuaries. The three types of birds surrounding the garland were all familiar from Augustan monuments: at the center, an eagle, bird of Jupiter, ruler of the gods; at the corners, swans, birds of Apollo, patron god of the emperor; and below the garland, two songbirds, symbols of bountiful nature.. Limestone sarcophagus ca. 475-450 B.C. Cypriot On the long sides A: HuntB: BanquetOn the short sides A: Chariot sceneB: Perseus departs with the head of the Gorgon Medusa. The winged horse Pegasos and the hero Chrysaor are born from her severed neck.Like the large sarcophagus in the adjacent gallery, this chest-shaped sarcophagus stands on four square feet and has a lid in the form of a peaked roof. The scenes carved in low relief on all four sides have parallels in Greek art but show variations in style and in detail that were introduced by the artists working at Golgoi. In the hunting scene two pairs of warriors armed as hoplites (foot soldiers) attack a bull and a boar while a single archer approaches from the left with drawn bow. Three trees fill the background and a horse, a rooster, and a dog complete the composition. While pairs of fighting warriors were common motifs in Greek art, the Cypriot sculptor has conflated a battle scene with a hunting scene and has also taken more lib

Casket with Scenes from Romances ca. 1310-30 French This coffret illustrated with scenes from Arthurian and other courtly literature of the Middle Ages is one of the most imposing examples to survive. The lid represents the assault on the metaphorical fortress, Castle of Love, with a tournament and knights catapulting roses. The left end depicts Tristan and Isolde spied upon by King Mark, and a hunter killing a unicorn trapped by a virgin. The right end shows a knight rescuing a lady from the Wildman (Wodehouse), and Galahad receiving the key to the castle of maidens. At the back are Lancelot and the lion, Lancelot crossing the sword bridge, Gawain asleep on the magic bed, and the maidens welcoming their deliverer. The newly discovered front panel (1988.16), lost since before 1800, is a poignant depiction of the love tragedy of Pyramus and Thisbe (two scenes at right) and Aristotle teaching Alexander the Great and Phyllis riding on the back of Aristotle (two scenes at left).
