Personification of the River Nile ca. 1785-95 Giovanni Volpato Italian In 1785 Giovanni Volpato established a manufactory in Rome for the production of biscuit-porcelain sculpture. This group personifying the river Nile was the most ambitious work made at Volpato's factory, as well as the most expensive, as shown by a surviving price list. Most of the sculptural groups made under Volpato's supervision were reproductions of antique marbles, the biscuit- porcelain medium being ideally suited to this purpose. The River Nile is a reduction of a colossal Roman marble at the Vatican, much admired in Volpato's time, and is remarkably faithful to the marble original; only the base has been simplified, as was required by the change in scale. The composition is an allegory of fecundity. A cornucopia is placed prominently near the reclining Nile, and the sixteen small children who cavort on and about the figure of the river symbolize the sixteen units of measurement, known as cubits, by which the

Eve Bewailing the Death of Abel 1800-1810 Joseph Nollekens Eve, the Biblical mother of humanity, halts in mid-stride to confront the body of her murdered son, Abel. The force of her arrested motion and out flung gestures of grief scatter her unbound hair and unfurl the length of drapery that billows around her upraised arm and cascades downward to her feet.Nollekens modeled Eve by building up the clay with his fingers. He worked with speed, leaving the flesh patterned with rough strokes made with a flat wooden modelling tool. Long, deep incisions, scored into the clay with a pointed modelling stick, separate the locks of hair and punctuate the winding folds of drapery. Nollekens drove the sticks sharp end into the clay to create the dark expressive holes that are Eves eyes and open mouth. To fashion her nose he pinched the clay with his fingers.The subject of Eve mourning the death of Abel is not recounted in the Old Testament narrative of Cains murder of his brother (Genesis 4:8).

Cherub second half 18th century Italian, Naples In 1964, Loretta Hines Howard generously presented to the Museum over 140 Neapolitan crèche figures, dating from the second half of the eighteenth century. The varied assortment includes figures from the three traditional scenes of a complete Neapolitan presepio: the Nativity, with angels, shepherds, and sheep; the procession of the three Magi, with their colorful retinue of attendants; and the varied and gay crowd of country and town people thronging the tavern, or inn, of Bethlehem the diversorium mentioned by St. Luke, where on the Holy Night there was no place for Mary and Joseph. Averaging between twelve and fifteen inches in height, according to the position they were to take in perspective in the stage set, the figures are pliable and can be given poses at will, according to their facial expressions. (41.9 x 54.6 x 21.6 cm), Terra cotta, France, 19th century, Based upon a chalk drawing by the Italian Renaissance artist Michelangelo (1475-1564), this terra cotta sculpture depicts Leda, the ancient Queen of Sparta, being seduced by the Greek god Zeus in the guise of a swan. Dating back to Greek mythology, Leda and the Swan offered artists an acceptable motif for erotic depiction. The French sculptor Albert Ernest Carrier-Belleuse chose this mythological subject to embody the sensuality of the reclining female form and evoke the artistic traditions of the great Renaissance masters.

The story of Judith from the Old Testament Apocrypha was popular in the Baroque period. The image of a victorious woman defeating her male oppressor may have appealed to the artist's patron. Some were copies, some inventions, but all owed their origins to Greco-Roman antiquity. By implication, these adaptations underscored the owner's erudition and sober good taste. Dancing dwarf 332-150 B.C. Ptolemaic Period The marble dancing dwarf with his fine features is almost certainly from Alexandria. As in so many aspects of Ptolemaic art, the dwarf represents the convergence of different trends. Although in this instance the top of the head, arms and legs are missing, bronze statuettes of dancers and dwarf-dancers often hold castanets, and the origin of the type should probably be associated with the castanet-playing dancers hired for religious or private occasions who are noted in some Ptolemaic papyri. In Greece such dancers had long been associated with ecstatic orgiastic cults like those of Dionysus or Cybele, so it could be that such cults are sometimes involved. However, the employment of such individuals certainly was adopted for private occasions and banquets.
