Aquamanilia were the first cast vessels of medieval Europe. Usually cast in copper alloy through the lostwax process (cire perdue), the hundreds of surviving examples date from the twelfth through fifteenth century. The Metropolitan Museum of Art has one of the most important collections of aquamanilia in the world, with examples at The Cloisters and in the main building on Fifth Avenue, in both the medieval galleries and the Lehman Collection.Although compromised by the loss of the horse's hooves and by significant wear to

Joe's Farewell. Artist: Daniel Chester French (American, Exeter, New Hampshire 1850-1931 Stockbridge, Massachusetts). Dimensions: 10 x 7 x 5 in. (25.4 x 17.8 x 12.7 cm). Date: 1872-73.From 1870 until his departure for Italy in 1874, French modeled twenty-five decorative sculptures from which thousands of parian and painted-plaster reproductions were made and sold for a few dollars apiece. His decision to create small works for a primarily commercial end was influenced by the success of the plaster statuettes of John Rogers known as Rogers Groups. Several of French's efforts were inspired by the writings of Charles Dickens. "Joe's Farewell," from a passage in "Barnaby Rudge" (1841), reflects Joe Willet's trials and tribulations in his relationship with Dolly Varden. French closely followed the narrative in composing his group as Joe, smitten with Dolly, bids her farewell by the forge in her father's workshop. How many parian and painted-plaster reproductions of "Joe's Farewell" were pr

Sardonyx cameo fragment with Jupiter astride an eagle 1st century B.C.-1st century A.D. Greek or Roman Despite its fragmentary condition this cameo still displays the fine quality of its workmanship. The eagle's feathers and Jupiter's torso and bearded face are carved in exquisite detail against an almost transparent background. The imagery of the Father of the Gods flying through the heavens astride an eagle was adapted for use in Roman official art to depict scenes of apotheosis. This was the procedure by which emperors were deified; their ascent up to heaven was marked at the state funeral by the release of an eagle that symbolically carried the spirit of the deceased emperor up to the heavens.. Base for a Statuette early 16th century North French or South Netherlandish The two satirical scenes that decorate this carving take inspiration from the complexities of love. Figure from a Crèche: Group of Four Sheep, 1780-1830. Italy, Naples, late 18th-early 19th century. Painted terracotta; overall: 12.4 cm (4 7/8 in.). The practice of creating scenes of the Nativity for the home dates from the early 1700s in Italy, where people began to set up doll-like figures of about a foot or less in height. The custom was particularly popular in Naples around 1800, where crèche scenes (crèche means cradle, or crib) included many figures, whose heads and hands of painted terracotta, stuffed cloth bodies, and clothing adapted from contemporary local costumes gave them an amazingly realistic character.

Lohan Holding a Peach, 1662-1722. China, Jiangxi province, Jingdezhen kilns, Qing dynasty (1644-1911), Kangxi reign (1662-1722). Porcelain with famille verte overglaze enamel decoration; overall: 24.3 x 12.6 cm (9 9/16 x 4 15/16 in.). This lohan, disciple of Buddha with supernatural powers, was perhaps part of a house altar set or a decorative item in a household. Lohans, also known as arhats, are said to be able to tame tigers and tread on water. This lohan with a bald head is shown as a monklike figure, wearing a monks robe made of patches and holding the peach of immortality. This lohan and its pair holding a fu-dog (1964.191.2) embody a humorous attitude and playful behavior, indifference to danger and miracles, and hence a detachment from worldly affairs.During the 1600s, porcelain sculptures decorated in famille verte overglaze enamel colors were produced for the domestic as well as export market to Europe.
