Date: 1892.Degas undertook a series of landscape monotypes during a visit in October 1890 to the Burgundian estate of his friend, the artist Pierre-Georges Jeanniot. Over the course of the next two years, he made about fifty monotypes, a group of which he exhibited at the Durand-Ruel gallery in 1892. Although the artist called these views "imaginary landscapes," the present work is thought to reflect his experience traveling through Burgundy in a horse-drawn carriage. Using colored oil paints, overlaid with scumbled pastels, Degas produced a view of a mountainous landscape, partially obscured by mist, which verges on abstraction. Shigeru Aoki (1882-1911) was a Japanese painter famed for his combining of Japanese mythology and legends with the Western-style art movement that could be found in some late 19th and early 20th century Japanese paintings. Aoki was born into an ex-samurai household in northern Kyushu. He left his home in 1899 to pursue artistic studies in Tokyo, and soon began to accumulate critical acclaim for his artwork and its use of Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood techniques mixed with Kojiki themes. He died in March 1911 from tuberculosis, aged only 28.

Mrs. Chase in Prospect Park 1886 William Merritt Chase American William Merritt Chase met Alice Gerson (1866-1927), whose father managed a successful New York lithography firm, in 1879 or 1880, and married her in 1887. The young couple settled in Brooklyn, where he painted his first park scenes. Ipswich Town, or Harbor Scene. Artist: Arthur Wesley Dow (American, Ipswich, Massachusetts 1857-1922 New York State). Dimensions: image: 5 x 2 1/4 in. (12.7 x 5.7 cm). Date: ca. 1893-95.Part of a series titled "Along Ipswich River," this upright composition echoes Japanese pillar prints and reflects the artist's study of Hokusai and Hiroshige. Dow was one of the first Americans to master Japanese woodblock printing techniques, wedding an admiration for Oriental aesthetics with an English Arts and Crafts sensibility. He called his woodcuts "color themes," and they demonstrate his devotion to Eastern concepts of line, color, and notan-the balance of light and dark. He executed the entire printmaking process by hand, carving and inking the blocks and then printing them sequentially on damp mulberry paper. In this case he did not use a linear key block to pull elements together but evokes landscape forms by juxtaposing color shapes. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

This work was one of the first watercolors in which Sargent began to explore the interplay of carefully framed stone garden features and the ambient effects of their green settings. He found his subject in the Jardín de la Isla at the Royal Palace of Aranjuez, near Madrid, one of several old and neglected formal gardens that charmed him during visits to Portugal and Spain in 1902 and 1903. He characteristically bypassed the grander aspects of the setting to feature this small fountain and dissolved the form of the crowning sculpture of Triptolemus, a mythological figure, in watery touches of shadow.
