In the Simplon Pass John Singer Sargent (American, born Italy, 1856-1925). In the Simplon Pass, 1909. Translucent watercolor and touches of opaque watercolor and wax resist with graphite underdrawing, sheet: 14 7/16 x 21 3/16 in. (36.7 x 53.8 cm). In the Simplon Pass is a later addition to Brooklyns collection. Portions of this watercolor, particularly the face and parasol shaft, are unfinished. Though Sargent at times left faces blank, an infrared image of the underdrawing reveals facial features (see image below), as well as details in the parasol. American Art 1909

His father, the artist John La Farge, embraced Japanese aesthetics in his own art and also collected and published widely on Japanese art; Grant La Farge’s mother, Margaret, was the grandniece of Commodore Matthew Perry.
