Battleship Iowa Passes Under Oakland Bay Bridge -- The battleship Iowa passes under the Oakland Bay Bridge today, headed for the mothball fleet. The "Big I" was launched at New York Navy Yard in August, 1942 and commissioned the following year. She carried President Roosevelt to North Africa for the Teheran Conference, and then was transferred to the Pacific where she participated in virtually every major sea engagement until V-J day. The spearhead of the Royal Navy's second attack advancing on Narvik, putting the enemy destroyers to flight. The advance of Vice-Admiral Whitworth's force upon Narvik was preceded by super-destroyers of the Tribal class in line abreast. Behind them was the Warspite, sending 15-inch shells over them. Seen here are the trapped German destroyers turning to escape up the smaller fjords, where they were later hunted down. Date: 13 April 1940
