Louis-Henri purchased the land and buildings in 1730 expressly to establish a porcelain factory, and it is likely that the first products of the new enterprise appeared within a year or two after the factorys founding.[1 Similar to Saint-Cloud, the production was entirely of soft-paste porcelain, because the formula for true or hard-paste porcelain was unknown in France at that time. The early paste developed at the Chantilly factory must have been deemed insufficiently white, since tin was routinely added to the glaze in order to provide a whiter surface on which the enamel decoration would be applied.[2 The presence of tin created a distinctive, opaque, cool white glaze that is a characteristic feature of Chantilly porcelain duringPot, part of a cupboard set, the 3 clocks (attributed to), after Jan van Putten & Co., c. 1820 - c. 1850 Pot, of multi -colored Faïence. The old Derby porcelain was produced from 1750 to 1848, and was foremost distinguished by the ownership of William Duesbury I and II. When the original factory closed in 1848, a number of former workers established a separate smaller factory at King Street, Derby, using Crown Derbys original molds and patterns and oftentimes incorporating the factory marks on its wares. Around 1876, a separate company established a factory at Osmaston Road under the name Derby Crown Porcelain Company (and eventually bought the King Street factory in 1935), although the firm did not being producing commercial pieces until two years later. In 1890, the factory was granted the privilege of using the title "Royal Crown Derby Porcelain Company." A tin glaze was applied to these wine coolers (see also 1985.384.1), providing an effective background for the palette of strong colors that has been employed. The stylized floral decoration is reminiscent of that found on Japanese porcelains of the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, and this form of painting was known at Doccia as a tulipano, although the large central flower may depict a peony rather than a tulip. These wine coolers are notable not only for the quality of the painted decoration but also for their exaggerated Rococo form. With its undulating and asymmetrical rim, and the asymmetrical molded shell decoration, the design embodies the principal characteristics of the Rococo style.. WinTwo vases.
