Ledger Book Drawing Possibly Cheyenne. , ca. 1890. Pen, brown ink and wax crayon on wove paper , 7 1/4 x 12 1/2 in. (18.4 x 31.8 cm). Beginning in the 1860s, Plains warriors illustrated their battle exploits in ledger books and on ledger-book paper acquired through trade and as gifts or booty. This practice continued a long Native visual tradition of depicting individual and tribal histories on hide shirts, robes, tipis, and tipi liners. Native artists often depicted warfare between tribes, as well as between tribes and the U.S. Army. Here two warriors in war bonnets attack a third man wearing a single eagle feather. Poncho or Tunic Nasca. Poncho or Tunic, 100-200 C.E. Camelid fiber, 74 7/16 x 27 9/16 in. (189.1 x 70 cm). This large panel is the most elaborate example of the discontinuous warp and weft technique in the Museums collection. With this technique, the warps and wefts on the textile change with every color and weaving session, rather than being continuous along the length and width of the fabric (see diagram). The bold designs on the red background include three large, colorful supernatural beings connected to several smaller figures. The largest figure wears a green and yellow feline pelt and is associated with two mythological animals devouring humans: an anthropomorphic bird and a shark depicted with a human arm. These composite beings combine animals of the natural world with Nasca supernatural deities who keep the world in order. The panel was converted into a poncho in antiquity, when a head opening was made at the center and long tassels were added at the shoulders. ___________

Krishna Quells the Serpent Kaliya, from a Bhagavata Purana, c. 1710. Northwestern India, Rajasthan, Rajput Kingdom of Mewar. In the forest where Krishna lived as a youth among the cowherds, there was a great pool of water connected to the Yamuna River. The water had become toxic from the poison excreted by all the snakes living there, including the serpent Kaliya. Kaliyas royal residence is depicted at the lower right. In order to make the pool usable for drinking and bathing, Krishna tamed the serpent king by dancing on his heads. Krishna then persuaded him to move away to the ocean.

Maharana Jagat Singh Hawks for Cranes dated 1744 Shiva and Dayal This spectacular panoramic vista of the Mewar landscape depicts a royal hunting party in a series of consecutive vignettes, creating a continuous narrative. The aerial perspective, reflecting the plunging views of terrain offered from many Rajput forts, was an innovation of the Mewar school, perhaps combined here with a new awareness of European cartography. The rays of golden sunthe insignia that Rajput princes displayed on their standardsadd a surreal if somewhat celestial dimension to the composition. This painting is remarkable for its complex topography, differentiated with imaginatively devised pictorial deviceshillocks, streams, fieldseach deployed to create a landscape of the imagination. The large scale of the work is typical of mid-eighteenth-century Mewar painting, as is the likelihood that multiple artists worked on it in a palace studio environment..
