The caption for this illustration reads: He was horrified to see a snake on the wall. This tale involves a mean monster named Bash Tchelik, which means "real steel"). He terrorized the area and had taken wives of three princes. This illustration shows the youngest rince saving a princess from being killed by a serpent. The princess had been locked in a tower to keep her from Bash Tchelik. The youngest prince managed to outwit Bash Tchelik by findinng out the sevret to his power and killed him. The illustration is from a 1921 book on Serbian myths and legends.

Florine Stettheimer captured the dynamic social worlds of her intimate circle of family and friends, many of whom were artists and members of New Yorks avant-garde. This whimsical portrait was inspired by a birthday celebration for Stettheimers mother at the familys summer retreat in Bedford Hills, New York. Stettheimers interest in theater and set design is apparent through the arrangement of a stagelike space composed of horizontal bands of color. The blazing hues, coupled with the lithe bodies of the women and the wilted tree branches in the background, evoke the summer heat described in the paintings title. American Art 1919

Siyah Kalem or 'Black Pen' is the name given to the 15th century school of painting attributed to Mehmed Siyah Kalem. Nothing is known of his life, but his work indicates that he was of Central Asian Turkic origin, and thoroughly familiar with camp and military life. The paintings appear in the Conqueror's Albums, so named because two portraits of Sultan Mehmed II the Conqueror are present in one of them. The albums are made up of miniatures taken from manuscripts of the 14th, 15th, and early 16th centuries, and one series of paintings is inscribed work of Master Muhammad Siyah Kalem. Something of the style and techniques of Chinese paintings is apparent in these, and an acquaintance with Buddhist art, particularly in the depictions of grotesque demonic figures.

Mantle ("The Paracas Textile") Nasca. Mantle ("The Paracas Textile"), 100-300 C.E. Cotton, camelid fiber, 24 5/8 × 58 11/16 in. (62.5 × 149 cm). This extraordinarily complex mantle, or cloak, is one of the most renowned Andean textiles in the world. It was most likely used as a ceremonial object. The ninety figures decorating the border, created by needle knitting, have been interpreted as a microcosm of life on Perus South Coast two thousand years ago, with a particular focus on agriculture. Many of the images illustrate native flora and fauna as well as cultivated plants. Costumed figures may represent humans impersonating gods and acting as intermediaries between the real and supernatural worlds. Severed human trophy heads are shown as germinating seeds, suggesting the practice of ritual sacrifice and the interconnected cycles of birth and death.
