Traveling extensively throughout Great Russia, she collected many fine examples of textile art of the wealthy peasant class. From the 1870s until moving to France in 1902, Shabelsky amassed a large collection of intricately embroidered hand-woven household textiles and opulent festival garments with rich decoration and elaborate motifs. The Brooklyn Museum holdings include many fine examples including the majority of the garments. Portions of Shabelsky's collection are also housed at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Cleveland Art Museum, and the Russian Museum of Ethnography in St. Petersburg. In this example, the traditional imperial eagle has been transmuted into a plant form, combining the tree of life with Russia's heraldic symbol.. While their appearance and feel is akin to velvet, the pattern is created by row upon row of minute, hand-tied knots of fine silk thread. Only about twenty carpets of this type are known to survive, four of which are in the Museum's collection. They are referred to as silk Kashan carpets, after a city in Iran where silk carpets are said to have been produced as early as the sixteenth century. The designs of these carpets, however, have been likened to works produced in the contemporary Safavid capital of Tabriz, suggesting a connection between Kashan and the royal design workshops of Tabriz..
